Removing wing mirror covers on a 2006 8P2

Have done a search but only found a thread with a 2009 car, where i think the mirrors may be slightly different?

Mine have no indicators on and i'm looking to get the covers off to fit silver ones. Does the mirror glass need to come out or should this just be a technique of popping it off? Which i clearly don't have at present...

Remove glass by tilting forward & even pressure across the backplate, pop the bottom black trim of which can be a pita, then maybe undo a few screws inside that holds the cover on & then push some plastic tabs aside to release the cover, pull of from above.
