RS3 Rotors no longer matt....

Hi all,
First post in the RS3 forum.

I'm actually an S3 Sportback owner but I've fitted a set of genuine RS3 Rotors to it that I purchased from another member on here in good condition for a great price.

One question for other RS3 owners is that they no longer seem to be that nice perfectly matt finish any more, the spokes have gone sort of semi-gloss, he did mention he had polished/jetsealed them some time ago but my experience of wheel sealant is that it lasts a few months then comes off.

I just wondered if anyone had noticed the same with theirs and if so if it's something that can be reversed?

the finish on the discs degrade with time and look bad unless you paint them when they are new, he probably attacked them to try and make them look half decent

is yours the faulty pre upgrade set?

You'll need to know exactly the products he used, to find out what is the best to remove the product with.

on my old matt wheels i also used to wash them they use meguiars glass cleaner to clean and dry them up and keep them looking fresh and matt. worked really well. normally i would use quick detailer to freshen them up if they wasnt matt

I'm thinking back to the process I used to clean them, but after the amount of salt that was sprayed last winter I was paranoid the diamond cut edges would corrode like so many others I've seen round here.

The wheels were washed (snow foam then Megs Gold class / clay barred / polished by hand with Chem Guys Rocket polish / 2 coats Jetseal 109). Subsequent post wash top ups were sealed with Chemical Guys Wheel Guard (2 coats after each wash).

The only thing I can think of that may have caused the matt finish to degrade is the polish step. Whether this could be resolved by a new lacquer coating? I'd never noticed it as I didn't have a reference point, but they've never been refurbished (confident if you get them checked bu any wheel refurb specialist they should be able to confirm this...?)

Hey Warren, don't doubt they've not been refurbished after you telling me last night mate

I was just wondering if it was reversible at all, polishing them has probably done it then, no biggie they still look great

The only saving grace is that it may have stopped any deterioration / blowing of the slight edgings on the near side wheels, but I spoke to someone who has a TTRS at the end of my street and he says his did similar (another obsessive car cleaner). He's no longer got the car otherwise I'd have photographed them (he now owns Jonny Cockers old TTRS with lightweight Team Dynamics wheels).

Question: do you want: a) a matt finish, or b) a polished finish?

As Warren says he polished the wheels, so the only way to get them back to matt finish is to apply some new matt lacquer. I liked the polished finish on 45bvtc's wheels so i also polished the wheels on my RS3,its just a matter of personal choice both look good .

I cleaned up my second set of OEM alloys (that I bought secondhand) and it was definitely the clay & polish stage that made them shiny.

The upside is that they are much easier to keep clean when polished. The sealant I use (Gtechniq C5 and top ups with C2v3) applies much better, lasts longer and dirt washes off much easier too :icon_thumright:
