S4 Alarm Going Off

Afternoon All,

I have an issue with my alarm, which goes off randomly, usually at night. I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem.

Car: 2010MY B8 S4 Avant (without keyless entry)

Problem: Alarm goes off randomly at night (3 times last night, hasn't done it for 6 weeks or so prior to this)

Containment: Unlock car with fob, lock again.

Info: All door locks work fine, no other issues with car. (data logs below)

My question is what is the root cause of the alarm going off, at the moment I have two thoughts:

- Door handle sensors (known fault)
- Vehicle energy management system (thinks 12v Battery is low, possibly reset current battery adaptions)

I then did some further digging on VAG-COM, and interrogated the convenience module:











After some digging on the internet I found the following, a TSB for A5/S5/A4/S4 regarding a similar issue- not my car does not have keyless entry.

The symptoms are all very similar, but my information isn't sufficient to know what the codes are in Module 46 > Block 18 (i.e. what does a value of 2.0 mean?)


- TSB suggests Value 2 (no communication)

- VW 'Tech-Tips' suggests Value 2 (Front Passenger Rotary Latch Switch)

So, where to go from here...?


My other question is regarding handed faults (i.e. passenger side) is Ross-Tech mature enough to understand implications RHD/LHD regarding fault handling. I.e. I'm using a VW America Tech Tip to decipher a European fault code, I presume fault code descriptions change with RHD/LHD?

looks to me like your battery is going flat.Your alarm also works on a voltage drop,ie the door is opened the interior light comes on the voltage drops & the alarm goes off.If your battery is failing the voltage drops slightly the alarm will sound.

Oddly enough my alarm was apparently going off at work today...no obvious causes and battery meter showed 100%...

Hi There, I had a similar issue with my car where the alarm would go off randomly. Day or night. I did not have the benefit of a vcds but took it to Audi as under warranty. They found a problem with the bonnet switch/sensor and it was replaced. Same thing happened again and again a faulty switch/sensor on the bonnet.

Has been replaced again and not had the issue. Sorry i don't understand the coding you have put up but just thought i would share my experience with a similar issue. I also have a 2010 B8 S4 Avant.

I have had the battery meter enabled and it shows 100% so if it happens again i can check that to to see if it's the battery.

I had similar problems years ago with a 4 year old Cav GSI 4X4, initially it was a nuisance as it would arm the alarm mainly while I was at work - in the company carpark, security used to say "its gone off again!". As the horn assembly on that car was easy to reach, I temporarly fitted an inline fuse of a low value, really to see how frequently this was happening, and luckily, all the time the system was armed, you could hear a very quiet "tick" from the alarm horn, so to check, all I had to do was to listen to see if I could hear the "tick" while the bonnet was still closed. Next as I really needed to do something to sort it out, I replaced the car battery - problem gone for the next 4 years, then it came back again, replaced battery - problem gone. The problem seemed to be that the battery while cooling down, would drop in voltage although it worked okay to start the car etc the winter prior to this, ie 100% okay except for this alarm issue. On that subject, if you do replace a battery on an S4, is there not something you need to do to "introduce" teh new battery to the car, BTW my 2011 S4 claims to have some smart energy saving/battery optimising charging system - they maybe they (B8) all have.

Cheers for the replies gents, did some more digging on VAG-COM and found battery health to be lower (38Ah from a 110Ah battery).

Replaced the 12v with the 'correct' one from halfrauds last night (65Ah) and VCDS shows 63Ah capacity and no problems with alarm last night or this morning.

Will see how this goes for the next few weeks, and then replace 12V with the correct one from Audi.
