But looks like someone tried cleaning the virtual dash and realised what a mess it was making

Exactly this. Seen it a lot and is a problem for laptops also when harsh products are used. People seem to have good results with removing and stripping down their cockpits, polishing off all the anti glare coating and then applying a screen protector overlay of sorts. I did this with an old RNS-E unit back in the day when I had an Audi A3 8P.
