Serious knocking noise on S3

My friend´s S3 has developed a terrible knocking noise, which gets worse as revs increase. He swears it is rod knock, but I am more biased towards a valve lifter or even a belt roller. Has anyone heard of something similar or some similar failure?

The car is going to the stealers on wednesday but if it is rod knock, I am almost sure he will get a new engine on warranty.....

I think they might try to fix it first.

I'd think they'd have the head off and have look first, if the bore is ok then they'll probably go for a repair.
