My 2001 A3 1.8 T Sport has just developed a noise which is apparently from the starter motor according to the man at Audi this morning. After the car has started the noise happens for about 1/2 a second as the starter motor is slowing down. The man at Audi said that it is common for the starter motor on the 1.8 engines to do this and the only way to cure it is to fit a new one (£215 fitted at Audi).

Has any one else had the same issue?

Cheers.

Yeah I had the same issue on my first A3. It went away after a while though, Id perhaps leave it a while see if it persists.

i had a rough noise on my old 1.8 a3 brought a starter motor from euro parts fors £60 and fitted myself. bit of a pain to fit and get to but saves alot of money! your need the car jacked up to get to it tho!

yeah the starter motor i replaced was about 60 quid, as said slightly fiddly but very easy to do - on an a3 u might even get away with the car bein on the ground if u can get under the bumper

Not had it on my S3 but had it on my Ibiza for about 2 1/2 years. It's what they call 'dragging' - i.e. the start motor fails to disengage immediately from the engine when it fires up, so you end up with the engine driving the starter motor and a clumsy disengagement of the starter motor shaft. That's the noise you can here.

As Ed says an exchange start motor should be about £60 or £70 from GSF or ECP.

Could always strip the motor down, I dont know if its similar to a 1984 Ford Fiesta (which was the last car I done it on) but strip it down and grease it up a bit then put it back in, could save a few pounds if its just the bendix gears sticking.

ive got the very same problem... havnt got round to fixing it yet... its alot worse when the weather is cold... and as the winter is coming up im thinking its about time to do it. I will buy the part myself and get a private garage to fix it.. might cost me £20 labour.

Mines does this too, my sisters polo does it, my cousins mk4 gti used to do it. Ive seen it on a few vag cars!

why not try and fix it 1st:

Just done this today on my 1.8SE.
Screaming has been eliminated completely. I'll report back when it returns!

Cheers for the link - saved a few quid!

Just a quick note having looked at the above link - i never had to remove the battery to change my starter motor- prob best to check this before you take it out as it'll save you ten mins.

sorry to bring this old thread up....has anyone got any website addresses or phone numbers where I can order a new starter motor from. As started with the orginal post the stealers want over £200 which seems stupid

my 1.8t had the problem for 25,000miles....had the brushes cleaned up etc and it stopped for 500 miles then i left it and it never gave me any crap....other than the morning noise...... again...not my prob now hehe

Mates Golf used to do this

Tracked it down to a dirty and worn brass bush, so made one outta phos-bronze so it was self lubing and wouldnt expand as much and its been perfect since

Before that we just used to clean it all up and it was fine for about 6months at the very least

Hmmm there a started motor refurb specialist about 15miles away from me... I might make a trip up there 1st before buying a new one to get a quote
