Hi there my s3 8p on a 57 my steering has randomly started nocking but strangely only when standstill or moveing slowly when you wiggle the steering wheel left and right or goin over an uneven surface don't seem to be track rods or tie rods tho does this mean it's the rack :/ ???

Cheers Scott

Deffo ur rack mate

Will any S3 rack fit an S3? I thought you can fit any newer rack just not an older?

No! Mine had a knocking noise, it got worse and worse... I had it checked and it had a different tack on it than it should have had so it had obviously been changed before I bought it but to keep the price down they put the wrong one on. That's why I've had issues...

just throwing it out there that i've heard there are knocking issue with the subframe due to oversize holes for the bolts. i.e. the oversize holes allow the frame to move slightly and cause it to knock..

this sounds very familiar to my current situation, all of sudden started to feel a nock through my steering wheel ,only really felt at low speeds both left and right sides when i steer, what steps can i start taking to eradicate this problem? i really didn't think it was much till i read this post! now my ahole going ten to the dozen :(

Sounds like a drop link deze...

no like speed bumps? I don't hear any noises just feel a clunk type through my steering wheel only at low speeds for example.. when I drive of my driveway which is little bit of an incline when i turn it 90 degrees to straighten up with the road I feel it then abit,,
although I did notice today driving around about 30mph on a road with a slight bend and downhill, the road surface was kinda crap, slight pot holes with cracks all over the road with the asphalt crumbling on the top of the surface. My steering wheel as in the 1oclock position going downhill on this curved road and I felt my car swaying asif I was driving on ice! bearing in mind it was a bumpy surface but felt like it was proper swerving even though my both hands have locked the wheel in this 1oclock position

i hope so does this part become prone to coming loose after time s3_mat ?

Start at the cheapest m8, change your top strut mounts and drop links. If that cures it then sound but if not your looking at 500-1000 for steering rack buddy.

wow that would be my worst nightmare! ihave never messed with the steering rack! if it was the strut top mounts wouldn't I hear a clunk going over speed bumps?i no this is a long shot but do you think the front anti roll bar could be linked to the swaying motion ? thanks for the feedback guys

Voorhees I would thank the lord if it was something so simple like that ! I am going to put my a3 on axel stands the weekend take the belly pan of and try and see if I can diagnose anything slim chance but would rather do this then potentially take it to garage :(

wouldnt clunk as such but you would hear a creaking and squeaking on bumps an turning the wheel.

I only feel it when turning the wheel at low speed and I drive of my drop curb even though its dropped its still about 1"and half higher then the road surface.
so when I reverse of my drive and im turning the wheel and as its turned I go down this drop curb I feel it through the wheel, and its like if I listen carefully a type of solid metal clunk sound if that makes any sense?

My rack is knackered and it sounds like metal clunking and you feel it thro the steering column (wheel) u could be in the early stages of rack bearings going but we wouldn't be able to tell u for sure. A good specialist would be able to tell you straight off, my advice is to let them look at it (good vag specialist)

im going to drive to a car park at some point today spend abit of time there driving round slow really investigating it! proper hang out the window and il come back with the doubt proof facts!

yeah theres defo a problem ,what it is yet I don't no, there is no play in my steering when I turn and the clunk/click seems quite centrazlised within the steering rack, kinda feels like the clunk/click is coming from the bottom.
only really felt when turning 90degrees onto another road etc.

put the car on axel stands today, took of the belly pan ,everything felt quite solid I could see the rack and pinion, put my hand up there and nothing wobbled or felt loose, and that's why I didn't take the subframe off to investigate as everything seemed ok.

I might get a specialist to check my power steering pressure before I buy tie rods, ball joints etc if it seems ok the right pressure etc that's when il be confident to start buying tie rods etc

anyone recommend anywhere in Birmingham?
