Sticky little cup holder

Has anyone unstickeyed a sticky cup holder? Everyone reckon just squirting a dash of wd40 around the joints will be fair enough or is it going to dribble and discolour the dash/buttons etc.. In proximity?

I have a similar prob on mine. Realistically you should take it out and clean it up. There are vids on you tube on how to do this but never shows it on a cab. So it's slightly different. Not done mine yet. Was going to remove and replace it with a new one.
