Hi all,
I’ve recently bought a 2014 SQ5 diesel. When pulling up at lights, the engine is cutting out (as it should) then restarting when I depress the accelerator (as it should) but it isn’t engaging the gear so it just sits there and revs. I have to select neutral then back into drive to pull away.
My local Audi dealer has diagnosed a faulty exhaust temperature sensor as the fault.
I’m no expert, but this seems a strange fault for an exhaust sensor???
Anyone able to confirm this as a possible cause please?
Many thanks in advance.

No problem with my SQ5 petrol, 18 plate. Same as your's stops/starts but is always in gear & pulls away straight away. As you say can't really see how a faulty exhaust sensor could make the box go in to neutral?.

RS3 S
I’m presuming the car is activating the clutch rather than coming out of gear. Although I’m not sure how an auto box clutch works exactly so I could be wrong.

.........not sure really fraskeay. As above mine does what it's supposed to do,does the stop/restart then when i hit the gas pedal it's off ?.

The stop/start is a complicated system that relies on a lot of different things to be in "agreement " for it to work. I'd be apprehensive that an exhaust sensor could be the cause though, that could be a seperate issue.
On the SQ5 8R it's a pants implementation of it anyway...I.e you have to have your foot on the brake at all times for it to work, as soon as you take your foot off the brake it starts.
This works against the auto hold function if you have it and for that reason i have it turned off and rarely use it.
On my old S3 8V you could take your foot off the brake and it wouldnt restart until you hit the gas.

None of the usual start stop sensors would cause the gearbox to go into a, possibly protective, false neutral though...

Ok. Thank you guys. I will put a bit of pressure on the dealership to look a bit deeper.

Have you changed the VCDS IDE08348-Start/stop start voltage limit - from 7.4volts to 12.1volts, Ju, or are you just using the 'auto-hold-function' and/or just turning OFF the 'stop/start'?

It's oviously temperature sensitive i.e. the start/stop function 'doesn't' with a cold engine but 'only' with an engine at 'normal' running temperature - emissions and all that.....

The stop/start works fine on the SQ5 I just prefer to have full use of the auto hold, the stop/start just counteracts it. So I've changed the default setting with vcds.
On the S3 8V I had, stop/start rarely worked in fact it worked better when you wouldnt expect it to i.e in winter with the heated seats on lights etc....it worked from cold!

I'll be interested to see the outcome of this for you Fraskeay, my 64 plate SQ5 has developed this exact fault recently. Mine has hill hold assist and the fault happens with this switched on, pull up to a stop, stop/start does it’s thing and kills the engine. Take my foot off the brake, engine starts but when I press the accelerator the engine just revs as if it’s in neutral. I have to move the selector into park then back into drive to pull away.
Once this has happened stop/start doesn’t work when stopping, if I press the button to turn it off then back on I get a dash message to say stop/start is not available - system fault. Once I turn the car off, the fault resets and everything works again until the next time.

I had it to a German car specialist today and they hooked it up to the diagnostic while the fault was showing on the dash. There was no fault code showing up. The guy suggested it may need a software update as the gearbox and start/stop seem out of sync. It’s going in again next week.

I’ve had a search on other forums and some have mentioned their cars have gone in and had “a wiring loom replaced”, when I mentioned this to the specialist today he asked what loom......obviously I have no idea.

So that’s where I’m at with it, not sure how it can be diagnosed if no fault code is logged (if though there’s an error message on the dash). I’ll post on here if I come up with a solution to it.

Cheers
