Hi guys, I have a very strong fuel smell coming out of the engine whenever it is running. The smell is more noticeable when it is idling compared to having it at 2000rpm. The smell is most noticeable under the bonnet but because of that it also gets into the cabin air vents when it's in the fresh air mode. It started when my mechanic changed the rocket cover gasket and he didn't know what it could've been until he realised that one of the air pipes is damaged. He said it's the pipe that has the air which then mixes with the fuel causing the engine to take the same amount of petrol with much less air. I have pictures below in case I'm wrong but could someone advise if this could be the case before i start splashing out a lot of money. I have a 1.4tfsi 150bhpThank you

Is that the corrugated pipe that look like it's wrapped in sellotape? I suspect it's a crankcase breather, but I don't know...

Yes, i am talking about the corrugated pipe, it's also indicated on the picture from VW parts. I'm wondering if that pipe being cracked could be the cause of the strong petrol smell (you could smell it outside the car with the bonnet down by the way)

No idea what that pipe does but doubt it’s the cause as it’s too narrow and wrong shape to be part of the air intake or fuel line.

Crack with sellotape needs to be replaced anyway but have you inspected the top of the engine block after removing the top plastic cover?

I'm not sure that the part you've labelled on the diagram is actually the part in question. However, I'm confident that it is part of the crankcase ventilation system which is connected to the inlet manifold at one end and the crankcase at the the other, via a valve. So definitely in an area which would contain fuel fumes. Fitting a new one should solve your problem.

I had a strong smell of petrol from my car after having some work done.

The mechanic had damaged the fuel regulator when putting the engine cover back on which is easily done.

Not making excuses for the mechanic - should’ve known better but it’s worth looking into if you’ve still got this problem.

Unfortunately the vent pipe didn't fix the issue completely. Luckily now the smell is more concentrated on the right side of the engine (where the fuel pump is ) hopefully its not a costly replacement

Long time since the reply but I went to another mechanic and the issue was the fuel line connected into the fuel pump was not connected properly and was keaking little drops out every few seconds. Hope that helps if someone is having problems like this in the future.
