Started looking at some S4's and 59 plate one that had a box change about 2 years ago with a new one.

Would this have been with the latest version or is there an easy way to tell?

It should be mate. If you have Carista (iPhone) or OBDEleven (Android) do a full scan and look at the coding on the gearbox, if it starts 8K1 then it's the latter unit, 8K0 and it's the early ones.

You should also be able to check it in the paperwork (if it is there) or call the dealership who replaced it and ask for it.

Thanks, I have full VCDS so can scan quite easily.
So is it likely to be latest revision and therefore less likely to have any mechatronic issues?

I would like to think so mate.

Mechatronics was just one of the issues. Some folks have reported that their v1 gearbox with new mech still developed problems later. You'll need to be sure that if the car is being sold as having had the gearbox replaced that it was indeed the whole 'box and not just the mech.

From what I've read I don't think you can as there are some differences and the early cars won't accept the later boxes

2010 & 2011 have lower gearing, and can't close the clutches as hard or as fast as the later cars. That leads to less ability to fast shift and launch control not being as aggressive as the later ones.

2012 has the low gearing of the 2010/11 cars, but has better hardware and can grab harder/faster. It fast shifts like the 2010/11, but the launch control grabs harder.

2013/2014 have higher gearing, and the best grab, giving them the best fast shift and the best launch control.

In short, the 2010 and 2011 transmissions are the least beefy and least "grabby" of all of them. They made the transmission better in 2012 and really nailed it in 2013

If you want to know more technical info speak to the guys at Milta Technology as they know these gearboxes iniide and out http://www.milta.co/

Thanks, sounds like a new old spec one then.

So will scanning via Carista on Android not work? Just thought I would scan for the hell of it!

Carista works on both but OBDEleven works only on Android.

Cool, so what type of scan do I need to run then on android? Had a quick look in the service menu but nothing jumped out at me.

I am not sure if the interface on Android is exactly the same as iOS but if you run 'Diagnose' you should be able to see all sorts of stuff in there.

Hi, so I ended up buying the car. Gearbox was indeed replaced in 2017 by Audi. The box has the following number in VCDS - 8K5 927 156H.

Is this box code?

This I believe is your SW code, what is your HW code?

Here is what came up.

Well I looked into this again and I might be slightly further on my learning curve about this subject but I'm a way off being confident in the answer. I'd like to know more of what Bobby knows because my 2015 S5 'box has version H03 0004 and Tash's 2014 is H02 0002 so I'm not convinced that it's as simple as 0001 is the earliest and 0012 is the latest.

However the 8K5 927 156H code definitely refers to the mechatronic SW and it is the same that would have been used on a 59 plate S4.
(FWIW a 156 is for the EU5 engine and a 166 is for the EU6 engine)

Unless I can find out more about this H0x xxxx coding I am beginning to doubt that it is possible to identify the version of the gearbox from the VCDS scan alone.

I completely agree @Dippy hence why I deleted my post last night :(, which was around would it be worth for example you and I or few others here upgrading to v0012...??

Also, should Doug as part of either the initial Tune or subsequent health checks not suggest us to upgrade to the newer version... And unlike you, it feels to me I have to start the whole learning process from scratch again :(

Sorry for the confusion I just registered the 156H I didn't read the full number.

8K1927156H - this has 0012 available
8K2927156H - this has 0008 available

There are no release notes with these versions so I don't know what the differences are. But as a general rule I always update the software before doing any tuning to the box.
Two main reasons for doing this:

1) If the car ever goes to Audi for any work there is less chance of them over writing the tuning if the box is already on the latest software
2) This software is like any other software development whereby they contain bug fixes (yes there is a chance they may fix one thing and break another)

Cheers
Bobby

All I can add is that I see that 8K2927156H is for a diesel engine, and that according to my dealer there were no SW updates for my car.

I can only say 0008 is available.
What version do you currently have?

Bobby - here is mine

Part No SW: 8K5 927 156 B HW: 0B5 927 156 K
Component: 0B5 30TFSIRdW H02 0002
Revision: --H02---

0005 is the latest available.

Tbh if you have no issues I wouldn’t worry about it. Updating now means remapping the gbox controller again.

Hi, scanned again tonight and then also looked at the Advanced ID section of the module.

So this indicates a build in 2015 and the last flash update in 2017.

So do I have the earliest mechatronic version then, the problematic one?
Also can you tell if the box is same as would have been taken out or any updates applied?

The only way I normally tell if its gen1 or gen2 is by using my programmer to determine which driver reads the controller.
8K5927156H has 0009 available - you are currently on 0001

To be honest I'm a little more interested in hardware part. I believe there was an updated version with extra filters that could be changed from the earlier versions.

Just interested to know if my box will have any of the revisions on it.

Hi @bobby singh,

I've got a 2013 A5 3.0 TDI and was just wondering which Gen my gearbox was? I'm not sure if you can tell from these details but would appreciate it greatly if you could!

Here are the details:

My Hardware number is: 0B5927156J
Hardware version: H01
Software Number: 8K2927156J
Software Version: 0005

Thanks in advance! :)

The hardware will be key tbh, the early versions had poor heat protection of the mech unit, hence why they failed so easily as they overheated and even melted elements is what I heard…
