Taking on the Dakar Rally

I originally started watching the Dakar about 15 years ago, because the spectacle of bikes, cars, and big honking trucks running together on brutal stages, running from one god forsaken bivouac to another, across endless stretches of African desert was just incredibly entertaining. Today in South America every stage consists of 500 kilometers of liaison with a couple of hundred kilometers of special stage thrown in wherever they can find some open country. It is more like a tour of South America than a rally-raid. I long to see them racing, cars, trucks, and bikes, all on the same route, between Gao and Timbuktu. That is "The Dakar".
