So after about 6 months of wondering if i should go buy a 8p dsg sportback or RS3, i have fallen back in love with my black 8l [means the grey ones gonna have to be sold :( ] and as i only did a rebuild on the black one with the block/gearbox in situ i once again have knowledge to gain off the group :)

So picked up a BAM engine with unspecified mileage thats been looked after but on occasion been driven to its max. It was sold because there was a tapping at 3k rpm and hence it was sidelined for investigation/repair. I posted pics of the 4 piece lifter [which i thought was the problem] but there was more to it than that. After finally getting time to get back into the stripdown, i found that the 3rd rod was loose and after a little more stripping down, it looked like the bearing had spun.
enjoy the pics :)
3 piece suite

Crank

as far as the block appears, its actually in pretty good condition, and only needs a hone altho its being ultrasonic cleaned and all galleys checked to be sure its 100%. Crank needs a grind, but within the figures for repairing [5tho] as i have been told. mains are perfect.

the heads had new stem seals, exhaust valves [ bent under heat- abused car? ] a skim and a full pressure test. its been give a 100% go ahead for under 400bhp fun ;) [without valvetrain] I have a full set of eurocam lifters [ apparently a good british company? ] that are ready to go in once i have sourced new cams [ piper road cams? ] I do defo need a new chain compressor as the mesh on this ones goosed. Is genuine best or the 200 note febi ones as good or is the mesh screen not that important? [ i would guess it is ]
Head

now this is where i get lost again. clutches. DMF. ugh.

i will pop the pics of whats was on the engine, bearing in mind it was launched once or twice so honesty is utterly appreciated. its got about 9k miles on it but off searches im not sure if its worth holding onto and refitting.
Clutch

i can't give an exact mm measurement till i measure it. plenty on both sides but.....i don't know clutches yet.

Dmf
both sides of the plate are pretty much the same, a few darker spots than i think is right which suggests burning, but hey, i dont know clutches :)

does it go back on or do i go smf ?

and finally, the crap in the sump. i cannot figure out where these shavings have come from, and ideally i wanna know before i go silly on a rebuild. pretty fine, copper in color, enough to make me wonder........pickup had like 2 flakes in it.
Badness

last one is in respect to rods. the engine came with maxpeeding forged [good for 700bhp apparently ] but they are not rifle drilled. im struggling here as im not going big big power and i'm simply not sure if i should be running em. decimal tenths and other guys have run none drilled with no issues...help on this.

cheers all :)

so another weeks passed, got a call from the shop today saying the cranks cracked. i haven't seen it yet but i trust the guy. he's also said the pistons are no good and i would be better off getting new/upgraded ones [can post pics if anyones interested, but for the sake of the forum load i ain't gonna bother] . took warrens to the bodyshop today also to get a quote on the repairs bodywise and i'm looking at 2k cash to sort...:( 2 wings and 1 rear arch plus dust to bonnet.

only car joy this week has been the looks from peeps in beer gardens and a focus ST i had a little fun with over the hills and his appreciation of that fun.

Thats wild high price for all the paintwork ur getting done.
I'm taking mine to get a quote in the morning for
Front bumper locker peeling an the side, drivers door has a deep scratch, two front wings and rear passenger wing are starting to show signs of bubbling and a couple bits of rust on the rear passenger one,the two rear sill caps are in bad way paint wise and the bonnet has Stone chips in it.
Be interesting to see what I'm quoted now I've saw urs.
I'll post it up the quote I get for a laugh.

im pretty confident i could do the job myself. the wings imho aren't totally gone, a little sanding, rust inhibitor and paint up n polish and all good i reckon, maybe at most a little filler. rear arches are prob 5 cm on one side and 0.5 on the other, flat off, treat and repair, laquer n polish up. currently waiting on a reply back from a seller on ebay about the none S3 [ S3] wings that fit but don't. lol!

prob gonna take a trip down ancoats tomoz and see a guy for a second quote.

Been down to the bodyshop my mate has and got 2 prices on repairing the paintwork on the grey one, to repair the wings [ cut out bad, rebuild up in fibre glass ] , repair the rear arches and to basically repaint the bottom half of the car he's quoted 500 give or take a few quid. the guy from ebay has replied about the wings and is double checking they are defo for an S3, so with luck they fit. 102 notes for a pair seems better than 120 for one second hand rusty one. so looking about 400 if i fit the new wings.
also got a price to have the black one's bumpers redone as theres a few marks on the front and the back is pretty dull, thats coming in at about 300. the fellas not a cowboy, and the business has been running prob the last 60 or so years and i know his finishing is pretty up there with bigger places.

happy day :D

update; cranks toast, cracked and not repairable. i now have a full bam engine barr the crank sat doing naff all in the unit and im too busy work wise to do anything with it. heads been skimmed and ready for the new lifters to go in, valve seats have been cut and polished. blocks been checked, rehoned and has been given the 100% 'go have fun with it' but im yet to pick it up.

the ebay wings were a waste, not even near correct fitment and prior to me emailing back and moaning, the guy was great, but now doesnt want to entertain my emails. this is after i emailed and specifically asked about the fitment. so im running the grey one with a ****** taiwan pressed piece of **** on one side and the scabby original on the other. the really annoying part is i found a bodyshop that was more than capible to repair the bad wing....:( respray - took the grey one in, been quoted for 2 wings, bonnet, doors around 1100, the black one needs rust treatment on bottom of both arches, the full back bumper and the boot plus a damn good polish at around 700. wont plug the guy unless it ok to, but dammmmn his work is good! more than my mate, but worth it.

think im gonna grab the grp wings from the scottish place, throw some spacers and the xxr dish alloys on the grey one and maybe put it up for grabs; i dont have the time atm to be playing about with cars as works gone mental. i cant move the black one on as the little un's told me ' don't sell it daddy' and i cant argue with that :)

Are you getting your wings repaired?
I do alot of rust repairs in bmw e46 m3s. I'll post pics of you like

i ripped one off in excitement and then realised its was wrong, so i have the better of the two still fitted but the bad one was taken by the local scrap rats, so its got a standard wing on the o/s currently. its also got the rears arches just starting to bubble thro, but they're still treatable thank god :)

not really running them both much atm as like i said; work has gone pretty mad. i still am going to get them both sorted but times my problem :S.

fire some pics of before/afters if you dont mind :) i have a nice 5cyl crafter that needs LOTS of work on the body ;)

Cut all the rust out. Weld in new metal. Por15 inside. Seal inside. Primer and stone chip inside.
Mainly do standard accident repairs. New car aluminium repairs as well.
But my passion is restoration and my own projects and enthusiasts cars. Most rust repairs I do are old m3s and all the owners are ocd.
Don't do vans lol

looks good, nice work :) shame bout the vans side, imma hit mine and run for another year till prices drop, prob do a full wrap [im a sign guy] and then look for newer/less rust :D seriously cant fault the 5cyl 2.5 tdi crafter tho, its run since i got it with literally no bother other than a dpf delete n a remap. 12 quid ish fuel from manchester to the wirral ain't bad.
