So after about 6 months of wondering if i should go buy a 8p dsg sportback or RS3, i have fallen back in love with my black 8l [means the grey ones gonna have to be sold ] and as i only did a rebuild on the black one with the block/gearbox in situ i once again have knowledge to gain off the group
So picked up a BAM engine with unspecified mileage thats been looked after but on occasion been driven to its max. It was sold because there was a tapping at 3k rpm and hence it was sidelined for investigation/repair. I posted pics of the 4 piece lifter [which i thought was the problem] but there was more to it than that. After finally getting time to get back into the stripdown, i found that the 3rd rod was loose and after a little more stripping down, it looked like the bearing had spun.
enjoy the pics
as far as the block appears, its actually in pretty good condition, and only needs a hone altho its being ultrasonic cleaned and all galleys checked to be sure its 100%. Crank needs a grind, but within the figures for repairing [5tho] as i have been told. mains are perfect.
the heads had new stem seals, exhaust valves [ bent under heat- abused car? ] a skim and a full pressure test. its been give a 100% go ahead for under 400bhp fun [without valvetrain] I have a full set of eurocam lifters [ apparently a good british company? ] that are ready to go in once i have sourced new cams [ piper road cams? ] I do defo need a new chain compressor as the mesh on this ones goosed. Is genuine best or the 200 note febi ones as good or is the mesh screen not that important? [ i would guess it is ]
now this is where i get lost again. clutches. DMF. ugh.
i will pop the pics of whats was on the engine, bearing in mind it was launched once or twice so honesty is utterly appreciated. its got about 9k miles on it but off searches im not sure if its worth holding onto and refitting.
i can't give an exact mm measurement till i measure it. plenty on both sides but.....i don't know clutches yet.
both sides of the plate are pretty much the same, a few darker spots than i think is right which suggests burning, but hey, i dont know clutches
does it go back on or do i go smf ?
and finally, the crap in the sump. i cannot figure out where these shavings have come from, and ideally i wanna know before i go silly on a rebuild. pretty fine, copper in color, enough to make me wonder........pickup had like 2 flakes in it.
last one is in respect to rods. the engine came with maxpeeding forged [good for 700bhp apparently ] but they are not rifle drilled. im struggling here as im not going big big power and i'm simply not sure if i should be running em. decimal tenths and other guys have run none drilled with no issues...help on this.
cheers all
