Evening,

It's been a long time since I posted on here, think I joined back when I was 19 and bought an A3 1.8T which made me feel like a million dollars back then!! About 16 years and 39 cars have passed by since then and I now find myself pootling round in a 97k Citroen C1 worth about £300!

The last few cars I had were an '08 Mercedes ML, MK5 Golf R32, E46 M3 conv and the most recent an Abarth 500 with Essesse pack which was so much fun.

Anyway I find myself in the market for a 'do it all' car which I can use on family holidays, trips to DIY store, mountain bike expeditions and spirited driving after a hard day at the office. The S4 certainly seems to tick all these boxes particularly in Avant form and I am lucky to have a very good friend on the doorstep who used to be a VW Master Tech and set up on his own specialising solely in VAG models.

I have a maximum of £15k to spend which will only allow me into an early B8 I think and the only option I really fancy is the SS seats. Read up a lot on tuning and MRC aren't far away and totally blown away by their VIMEO video of the red saloon - that sound and the way it gathers pace is incredible and that's 'just' Stage 2!!!!!!!

In terms of gearboxes it's obviously horses for courses, I don't have a particular preference however having had the SMG in the M3 fail and need rebuilding I am all too aware of these complex gearboxes growing old and dropping some big bills. Can anyone tell me if the stronic and manual gearboxes are both up to Stage 2 in stock form or do they need uprating??

There will also be a requirement for me to fit a tow bar for a small bike rack and occasional towing of a boat, I think I read Audi offered a tow bar for the B8 so can someone confirm it's possible to fit one to the car?

Any other particular options I should look for or advice as buying at the 'lower end' of the market?

Thanks in advance - it's fair to say I am excited......

S-tronic has had 3 implementations... v1, v1.5 and v2. I don't know exact dates, but the earlier (pre 2010-2011ish at a guess) are prone to failure - particularly with a tune.
