Thinking of selling up :(

Kel
Get the S3 sorted mate even in stg 1 form my s3 is streets ahead of my neighbours S5 V8. Its a bus !!!
Having come so far with the S3 you really need to get it looked at rather than just junk it and start again.

Keep the S3 or buy TT-RS or RS3 :D

Having owned both a modded S3 and 2 x TTRS and now on to an RS3 Id agree that I think you would regret it.

before we purchased our second TTRS we test drove an RS4 advant as everybody raves about them and suggested we should get one. After a test drive we were left disappointed and let down - sounded nice yes (although not as nice as the five cylinder) but due to it weight you didn't get that adrenaline feeling like as it took a while to get up to speed so for us it was a no. Ok it's not the same as an S5 but you get my drift!

I've not driven our RS3 yet as I've broken my foot but even for me it's not got quite the same thrill (as yet - modding under way ) as a passenger.

In fact I'm looking for another S3 as the rs is too precious to drive generally to carry kids around, etc. Mine was previously remapped, exhaust and had a pedal box on and was so much fun!!

With any car purchase you need to test drive it (ok wasn't much opportunity with the rs3 but we'd experienced the engine previously so had a pretty good idea)

Hi paddy i know what you mean just want the power on tap as soon as i want it ,plus i,m very impatient and after sending so much money i need it to be right .

Hi jen you could buy my s3 lol, no will get it all Checked over in few weeks

I test drove the S5 before buying another S3. I love the S5, it's sleek, beautiful, sounds amazing, everything in my head said that's what I wanted it, but when I drove it......

I'm not sure if it was because I'd come from Stg2 + S3, but it felt a bit leaden really. Amazing sound, but it was like for the sound you got you were expecting G forces to match, and we got back in the S3 and it was just a riot. I think an S5 is the better car, no dispute, but when you're paying good money I think a car has to be as much about how it makes you feel when you drive it, and there was just something that left me feeling a bit disconnected and disappointed. An amazing cruiser, but just not the car for me right now, and whilst it looks good I think the 3.0V6T version will have more scope (I only looked at V8).

Kel, your looking at a 3dr for more power. Just buy a TTRS. 400+bhp is easy to achieve in one of them.

I have to agree with you though, S3's do seem to be a money pit when it comes to modding. We've probably spent the same kind of money on these cars & Its quite depressing when you actually work out how much youve spent.

But as they say

LIFE IS TOO SHORT

I agree with Warren, i drove a A5 before i bought the S3 and it ticks all the boxes,,,,,,,until you drive it, then its just another big car, could be a Merc or a Beema or a Mondao come to that. You sit in it but never quite feel part of it...its all rather remote.. Put simply its a great car but its not sporty. If you want that punch in the back get a 3ltr derv not a V8. its almost as quick and a far better drive.

Your S3 sound like its nearly there. they are not plug and play, it just needs an hour on the rollers to marry up all the bits now.

I know what u mean rye its never ending as i,m sitting with over 1k + of new mods sitting in my house ,sachs clutch etc, catch can ,ths engine mounts, i do think the s5 looks so much better inside with the better sound system , and built in sat nav ,and that you dont have to spend so much money on it ,like the s3 to get more power ,like you said warren i will ask if i could go for a test drive on monday and take it from there ...

I think an A5 3.0 tdi would be my next consideration tbh, like the wider stance now, never used to appeal tbh.

PS. Paddy, sig cracks me up lmfao.

Yeah true paddy i will get it down to sheffield asap see whats going on , its not that i,m used to the power as a few asn members have been in it and they said nothing ,plus my girlfriend said , its feels no different than before .

In the end,you will be the one who will drive S3 or S5
and whatever you choose you will enjoy.
Audi is Audi mate:kissmyrings:

TBH mate, think you're missing the overall point, all the technology wont be what niggles at you chap, it will be the power, rest will be secondary to this & you're giving yourself a false sense of security, not having to spend so much on tech is all very well, but then you have to spend an absolute fortune for any real noticable power gains, its far from cheap, the mk5 r32 iirc jbs was it, did a supercharger conversion & made it effing fly, but it came at a huge cost, I dont want to even consider the price for an S5, but that would take of lol.

I remember watching an old guy who looked retired going down the inters track in his silver supercharged mk5 r32 iirc, feck me, that thing was unreal.

i think its 10-12k for a supercharger on an rs4 v8 and wont that be a similar engine.

After being in your car etc i think its maybe just the settings on the software, But the sachs clutch also helps you take the power up quicker as you found out. But i do miss my V8 i used to have the sound was amazing but you had to keep it on the boil or a Golf gti would give you a scare to it was on song then you could keep up with motor bikes lol

TTRS - Stage 1 (£600-700) is 400 neddies, and the noise..........., I would still have mine, if I could have afforded a track car as well.

Nuff said.

just trade it in and use the 13k you would save for an rs3.

mtm and abt are offering packages to 470 ish bhp and 620 ish torques...... now tell me that would be too slow!!!!!!

Getting 470bhp out of the RS engine still isn't cheap, and that's 620nm not lbs....of course it won't be slow, but you're looking at a few thousand pounds on top of the price of an RS to get near that.
MTM are quoting around £9k for their 470bhp conversion.

Yup...Do an RS....I reckon you would have the fastest and most boring looking supercar about :)

yes but it would give you far better gains and far superior performance than on a v8

Nothing against the RS or the TT-RS,but extracting big power from it is not easy or cheap right now.
Going above 500bhp requires a bigger turbo, and there are a number of issues in doing so,and as I've shown already, even getting to 470bhp is expensive.....the best current option on that is around 450bhp,and a lot of the RS guys are perfectly happy with just over 400bhp.

well there you go still 400 in those will be far quicker than any v8

All depends on power/weight ratio.....if you put the old RS4s V8 in a nice reasonably light car(like the R8)then you get a decent power/weight ratio and a pretty quick car, whereas in the heavier RS4,not quite so fast.
The RS3 is a bit porky by comparison with the TT-RS,but whatever way you look at it,it all comes back to power/weight.

I am looking at doing exactly the same as you Kel - 2+ S3 owned for the last 2 years and it has been a money pit as i have just longed for more and more power and more upgrades and i want something powerful out the box which I cannot afford to mod as th only real worthwhile mod on the S5 is the supercharged kit which is 8-10k ballpark!

I actually test drove an 08 plate V8 S5 at the weekend and it was stunning. Simply gorgeous to look at and drive. Very relaxing and smooth. Interior is lovely, massive boot space, really spacious interior - BUT - when i got back into the S3, i was so pleased to have the turbo back and the power delivery of the S3. Don't get me wrong - the s5 is no slouch but as everyone says, its a big old bus.

I am still very tempted as it would stop me spending on performance mods and without doubt, it sounds and looks amazing.

Very hard decision and putting mine up for sale was really tough.

One thing that some people appear to be missing is that a TTRS is an absolute min 30k and the S5 can be got for circa 20k. With the TTRS, there will always be more money to spend.

Decisions decisions.

Like all big coupes you will lose money on it like a stock market crash, same as you would with Mercs & BM's albeit to a lesser extent.

Not the end of the world depending on where you stand on depreciation but to me it would have to be worth the 'bang for my buck'.

Just a consideration!

100% agree but I think that there are certain cars that you will loose money on more than others and I am not sure the S5 is any worse than my S3. I have lost 5k (on stock car) in 2 years and 12,000 miles of ownership which i dont think is two bad. I would suggest that in two years on a well purchased S5 (at the right price rather than some of the main dealers dream prices) I would expect to loose 5k as well. Before the S3, I had an S4 cab - lost 5k on that in 2 years. Before that, I had a Boxster and lost 4k on that in 2 years and so it goes.

Hi james its just getting me down as i,ve still got sachs clutch to fit plus catch can, engine mounts , black grill , walk kit plus the suspension is shocking ,the problem is if i do keep it ,i would have to sort out suspension , and if want more power i would move on to stage 3 , thats why i,m thinking s5 , but still not 100 % sure ,going to audi tomorrow for mot so will see if i can get a test drive . i will probally have to keep it though for a bit longer as i wanted to change 4 months ago only had the car 8 months and audi wanted 4k up front to change.

Way back when I had s3 8l then I tried rs6+ real disappointment with crumy auto box and handling like a bus although fast in a straight line. Next was elise honda s/c 310 bhp very fast but no pleasure off a track at all. Next tried rs4 avant but again slightly stodgy handling and light weight steering feel- prefer my 1.9tdi b6 yes really ! then bought slk55 amg which beat rs4 but auto ****** me in the end as did the weight but lasted 2 years. Now in an 8p stg1 and Im back where I started with no regrets so there you go and I still miss the 8l but none of the others at all.
Colleague dumped his AM v8 auto for an s5 dsg due to back problems but dumped it after 8weeks as he really hated it due to dsg mainly, replaced with 997 auto which he loves.
Lots of focus here on the power you will miss but the handling is as big an issue imo plus i always miss quattro but s5 has it of course.

Dont do it. If you must change get something like an old 911 turbo and see what your really missing or a c63 if you can live with auto.

When you say an old 911 Turbo you have a variety of versions to choose from. The best 911 Turbo IMHO is the 993 turbo but you try and get one for less than 40k. I was about to buy one from the UK's most reputable Independant Porsche Specialist but the price put me off. Thats why I bought an S3.................You cannot buy a decent 911 turbo for less than 25k (and that will probably be a 964 Turbo) and if its not had a bottom end rebuild DO NOT touch..................stick with the Audis........your hand will be less in your pocket.
