Morning,

My car died on me last night.

Drove home went to Tesco's all fine come back to the car, fire her up and she is revving like crazy from 1-2.5k sporadically. So I switch off, wait, and switch back she is doing the same, hmm great. So I drive off and she is still reving even when the clutch is depressed and you can feel the pedal throbbing underfoot as you apply the throttle, not good. So I make it out of the car park after 3 stalls and pull up in a layby where I now have a christmas tree dashboard with ABS, EPC and EML all on. Have a look underneath the bonnet thinking a coil pack has gone or a hose has come off and nothing....hmm.

So I restart (after the second time and struggling even then) and get home in limp mode as the car is now having serious issues, I get home and turn off the engine and it just dies with a clunk and a clonk, great. Get it into the garage and hook it up to VAG-COM thinking it must be misfiring (Check blocks 15 and 16) and all is good hmm.

So I run a full scan and get the following:

Address 01: Engine
Controller: 8N0 906 018 BH
Component: 1.8L R4/5VT 0001
Coding: 10710
Shop #: WSC 13365

4 Faults Found:
16487 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too High
P0103 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17987 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Adaptation Not Started
P1579 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17950 - Angle Sensor 1 for Throttle Actuator (G187): Implausible Signal
P1542 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17579 - Angle Sensor 2 for Throttle Actuator (G188) Implausible Signal
P1171 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

So I dive onto Ross-Wiki to get a low down on 17987. 17950 and 17579

17950/P1542/005442 - Angle Sensor 1 for Throttle Actuator (G187): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active
Possible Causes
Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty
Power Supply for Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty
Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188)
See Measuring Value Blocks (MVB), usually MVB 062
Power Supply for Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty

17987/P1579/005497 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Adaptation Not Started
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active
Possible Causes
Throttle Body Alignment (TBA) not performed
Possible Solutions
Perform Throttle Body Alignment (TBA)

17579/P1171/004465 - Angle Sensor 2 for Throttle Actuator (G188) Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active
Possible Causes
Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty
Power Supply for Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty
Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Angle Sensors 1/2 for Throttle Actuator (G187/G188) faulty
Possible Solutions

Interesting is what I thought, so I cleared the codes and then perform a TBA on the car:

Drive-by-Wire (DBW) Engines using KW-1281
(These are engines WITHOUT a physical cable between the accelerator and the throttle. Check to see if the engine speaks KW-1281 by looking in the top left of the Open Controller Screen Some examples of KW-1281 engine controllers are 2000+ Golf/GTI/Jetta/New Beetle/Audi TT 1.8T)
Turn the key on but do not start the car.

[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Enter Group 060
[Go!]
[Switch to basic settings]
Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds.
[Switch to Meas. Blocks] button and you're all set.
Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!

All done and left it to sort itself out. Fired it up and all looks good and she is running fine. Still not sure though and as I can't take it out and test it I thought I would carry on further and clean the throttle body as well.

So I cracked on a got the TB off and gave it a reall good clean check out this guide for some good tips and stuff: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1116399

MY GOD IT WAS FILTHY!! AND CRAP WAS STUCK IN THE RIM AND SIDES WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED IT TO STICK

At the same time I gave it a shake and it sounds like something is rattling inside!!! Hmm this coinicides with any issue I am having at present. I get a rattling sound happening above 70mph (not below or up through the gears, just at 70 and over, strange) It is only apparrant when I touch the throttle it seems to get worse when I plant my foot, but when the foot comes off the rattling goes. It is a metallic sound of something stuck out and catching on something that it rotating like a fan or something - I really can't explain it better than that.

Hmmm I am thinking there is a connection in that the rattling is from the TB and something has come loose as a result I get the fault codes and issues.

However the car has run fine this morning but the rattling is still there.

So I am thinking that I will have to replace the TB instead, the part number for a BAM engine 06A133062C. Ebay have it for £94.00 used, http://www.autotekelectronics.com have it for £125.00 and VAG-Components.co.uk has it for £195.00

Any body have any thoughts?

Cheers for the longwindedness but I thought I would post info to help others plus see if anyother info is out there?

no thoughts other than.....woah!!!....hope you get it sorted soon Homie:thumbsup:
