can you run 234 40 17 on the back and 225 40 17 on the front of an audi s3 8l without damaging any thing
 
No, it is not intended to be. In terms of technical coherence, we discourage this.
Mechanically speaking, the fact of mounting different tyres on the front and back is risky only for cars equipped with permanent all-wheel drive.

The Haldex allows for 5% difference in rolling radius to compensate for tyre wear! but naturally! you'd want the same size front and rear, 225/40 would be under tyred, the speedo will be out.

It might upset the 4wd a little bit, if you run 225/45/17 then that should me fine.

This is the correct factory size.
