urgent help please Audi A1 head unit replacement

Long story short I have damaged my Audi A1 head unit beyond repair and need to buy / install a replacement.
Model number is
8XA035192C
Audi garage said 2k to buy through them which is a non option.
They said buying a 2nd hand one that is a different year (hardware or software number different) would mean it is unusable. I have found one from two years before that is the same bar the year. The model number is 8XA035192A

Is this true? Or do they not want to work with 2nd hand units?

I have found one for double the price that is exactly my model number, same hardware, same software. I could go for that and get them to code it.

Is this possible or is my car mmi well and truly done for? Any advice needed and appreciate thank you.

Second hand units will need component protection removed then coded to the car. Most dealers won’t deal with second hand unit whether they are the same or not as there’s no guarantee that it will work.
another option is there are specialist that repair these units so might be worth contacting them depending how you busted the original.
maybe contact @DJAlix and see if he can help you.

I have found someone who claims to be able to try and fix my unit... We'll see, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Component protection can be removed by Audi and authorised repairers like djalix so worth giving him a message. I’m curious how eBay sellers can code a unit remotely.

Oh brilliant that's good news. I'm cautiously optimistic that this can be fixed one way or another although probably at great expense.

I'll drop him a message!

I'd wired a sub into the back of it before, and as I had new focal front speakers too that sounded a bit underpowered I decided to wire an amp into it using a t harness.
Tried to remove the stereo again, came out about 2cm then got jammed. Spent half an hour meddling and eventually got a screwdriver to prise it out, must have pushed it upwards and caused a short as it started smoking a few mins later. Genuinely one of the worst and most gut wrenching feelings ever. Still wouldn't come out but I got myself down to Halfords and asked for help, the lad there kindly spent nearly an hour helping to get it out so I can start again.

But the faceplate got detached and the connector with it, all the clips are destroyed, safety pins etc all destroyed.

Absolute nightmare

Absolutely and often the result is not as rewarding as the journey. Realistically my car sounds more than good enough, but I hate waking up on a Saturday with nothing to do

8XA035192C is for cars built 30.05.16 to 23.01.17 the 'A' version is for 3.11.14 to 30.05.16 so your car will no doubt fall into the first dates and means 'A' version is not compatible with your car
