Hello all,

I’ve noticed few months ago till now that I got vibration on steering wheel, front seats and bottom of the car always when I’m driving over 60 mph .. Recently changed tires to 245/40 R18 Taurus .. All tires balanced and alignment (front) has been done ..

A quick one as this happened to me before but have you checked the wheel nuts are tight?

I’ve experienced something similar when someone tried to steal my alloys but must have been disturbed because they got as far as loosening the bolts!

Check wheels to see if they are hot, seized brake caliper piston or sliders? Coast to a stop, etc.

Could be a wheel bearing, but more likely to hear a loud hum at 50mph. For vibration to be as bad as described you'd notice play in wheel if you jack up the car.

You've ruled out tyres (you can get flat spots) and buckle in wheel if you've clipped a kerb.

If all that checks out- then start looking at engine mounts, central prop-shaft bearing carrier if a quattro, etc.

Had the same on mine, which took new discs and pads front + back two times over. The rotors were pretty seized as well, so they needed bringing back to life. It also took a new front alloy as it was cracked and mis-shaped. After 3 years of that vibration, it was gone.

Discs next?

Is it a quattro? Does your gearstick/dash also shake? Would you say the vibrations are very regular and get worse as you increase speed?

I'm thinking to check my alloys as the one of the guys who changed the front tyres mentionted to me that left side alloy when he was doing balance doesn't move properly so now I'm thinking maybe this causes the issue. It's only when I'm driving over 60 mph, when it's less speed runs very smooth.

As others have suggested.
If no joy then move onto engine mounts.

Service history, number of owners, how long had previous owner owned it, any modifications?

Hi mate,

Yes gearstick shakes as well, noticed that seats as well. Not quattro, 2.0TDI Manual 110kW
My Audi specialist disconnected all the rear suspension and re torqued to factory specs. It's dialled out ~70% + of the issue.

Yesterday I had my wheels rebalanced - another 10% better, but it's still there at 70mph+ in 6th. Moreso on load and inclines.

So I'm thining it's suspension related. Next step will be to take it back after a few hundred miles and re check all suspension points.

I'll ask for all bushes to be fully inspected. I'm getting closer, i feel.

Could be worth trying a different place to balance the tyres? It's always possible that they are not recalibrating the balancing machine and it could be out a little. Even better if you can find somewhere with a Road Force Balancer. I won't use anything else now.

One thing that might be worth testing is to raise the car on the ramp, leave it there for some time to settle (30 mins+) and then take it for a drive.

So no actual work done on the car at all, don't have anything touched, just see if taking the weight off the chassis makes a difference. If i understand it correctly, that would be unsprung mass.

If you find a difference in the vibrations, it could point you in the right direction.

I suggest this as every time i have had the car looked at, which has meant it's gone up on a ramp, the vibration has improved/minimised. But previously it would evenutally return after a few hundred miles; since the most recent work, it's very much dialed back (but not disappeared).

May be of no use but I had a similar issue with the Arbarth which turned out to be the wishbone rubbers perishing. To look at they seemed fine, it wasn't until one completely collapsed that I found the cause.

That's interesting. Wishbone rubbers - would that be the same as bushes? That's the area i'm looking at next, as you say, it's not possible to inspect without fully removing.

Bushes/rubbers, possibly the same thing. The ones I'm referring to are those that are pressed into the wishbone itself and not easy to change out. I found it much easier to replace the whole wishbone.

Do you have wheel spacers? Ive had front vibration on my last car caused by the incorrect center bore of the wheel spacers (supplied by the seller - not my mistake!)
