What have you done to your Audi A4 B7 today?

Hi all,

Bit off topic but not worth a separate thread:

Anyone know if the PCD between the A4 and A6 is different? Spec sheets both show 5x112 however someone has messaged me about my A6 wheels stating it’s slightly different?

I would just wack one on my A4 to confirm however still need to get a new locking wheel nut key -.-

The off set (Et) might be different e.g et35 or et40

Yeah good shout I think they are. I’m thick when it comes to wheels, what issues if any would that cause?

Basically it’s the centre line of the wheel. At worst you might need to run 3 or 5 mm spacers.

I finely fitted the S4 front brake on and stainless steel braided hose on the Avant tonight

Yep very pleased with them, managed to find a good used mirror glass on eBay after being let down with an online company, will stick a pic up later.

Didn't really want to but........ Got the Avant back up in the air to raise the front suspension back up a bit..... :frown new:
Love the look of it but can't live with the grinding of underside on anything higher than a fag packet.......... Also had some pretty heavy impacts when not treating speed bumps with enough respect......
Only going up 10mm to see if its better.
Of course that also means messing with the camber & tracking again . Oh Lordy........

Been out today a dinged two more alloys, both on offside on raised manhole covers, I maybe going back to 18" 8j with 235/40's on them, cant be dealing with all this rim dinging all the time …..235/35 on 8.5j don't make it any better either, slightest bump or manhole protruding catches the rim edges....arghhh

I feel your pain Rob - used to have 35 profile tyres on one of my Calibras (in fact they're still on it) & suffered a lot of punctures (inner sidewall) from going over speed bumps/branders/stones - in fact damn near anything. Rims would also catch on anything sticking up more than an inch. Really annoying & pocket damaging......... :grumpy: I actually had to replace a tyre that was only about 1/4 worn once and a week later got a sidewall puncture that wrote the brand new tyre off! Oh happy days.

It's only become an issue since going to an 8.5j, when I had the 19" rs4 style rims on which were an 8j with the same 235/35 tyres it wasn't an issue , but 8.5j and 235/35 does appear to leave the rim lips much more exposed to contact damage due to the tyre stretch , it's not a lot but of stretch but enough to make the difference with the tyres I have fitted.
I'm looking at some new 8j's today so hopefully that will help resolve things as I do like 19" to be honest....so out goes the new recaro's for now….bummer or what.

Just been comparing profiles a 245/35 19 maybe a help with the problem as its less stretch across the rim, almost cancels out the stretch with the 235, and only 4mm tall overall compared to a 235/35 so may have better rim lip protection especially when cornering etc.

Just dropped my new (to me) DTM wheels off to Southwest Wheel Repairs to have them refurbished and changed to Titan grey. Been forced to do them a bit sooner after hitting a rather deep pothole last week and now have a very square BBS CH

I fitted a new headlight switch surround and twisty bit - the old ones had worn quite a bit. Less than a sick squid from the Bay of E and less than five minutes to fit.

Changed my headlight bulb today....

Man this was way more involved than I thought. Tomorrow I’ll swap everything over to my forged block and hopefully start putting it back in by the end of the day. Taking off the head will be interesting. Never done it before so I have to do some reading if I can find anything on how to do it.

Thanks Rob. Hope to have it all buttoned up by Wednesday. Hope.

It’s an integrated engineering valve cover. I bought it through ECS tuning because integrating engineering wouldn’t ship to me. It’s a much more simple design than our standard cover but it requires you to have a catch can setup.

Welp. Progress. Albeit much less than I had hoped. Swapped most parts over. Installed my newish oil pump with the balance shafts deleted. Removed transmission and stock clutch. Don’t think the clutch had much life left in it. Last thing I need is to get the head off and transfer it over. The valves could use a good cleaning and I need to change the valve seals but I think I might wait on those since the clock is working against me. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow.

Spent a majority of the time on the head today. If it had been a straight forward swap then I think I would have the engine in the car by now but I got the valve seals replaced and the valves cleaned real quick. It was worth it. They came out great.

HOWEVER....I broke a bolt off on the cam cradle. I was torquing them down to 15 ft lbs but I think I must have misread and it was supposed to be much less.

I don’t know what I’m gonna do about. I might try to drill it out and retap the hole. I guess the smart thing to do would be to remove the cam cradle and then tap it that way but I’m getting worn down at this point.

good work Edgar, bit of a bummer about that bolt, still if things were to easy it would'nt be as much fun...

Bit the bullet and decided to book the old bus in for a full decoke, new clutch and DMF , and a cat back miltek system and a new remap to suit.......

that wouldnt be a bad thing Rob better than me as seem to be drawn to 3series xdrive as on the look for something newer

I found myself looking at autotrader a lot recently, even had a quick look at nearly new Mondeo estate over the weekend...….what was I thinking..lol, but they are great spec car and " reliable" ..but just don't look anything special which is why I still love the b7 ….it just ticks so many boxes even for a 12 year old car.....I could swap it in and hate its replacement, I'd rather just stick with the b7 and at least I know what i'm driving..lol

What clutch did you finally decide on Rob? Just had mine done, stuck with the stock LUK parts (and a new rear oil seal on the crank) 'cos I'm not taking this motor beyond STG1 anyway. Giving it 500 town miles to properly break in feels like it's taking FOREVER though...

Made some progress today. Had to go backward to move forwards. Pulled the head off and tapped the hole and put in an helicoil then stole a bolt from the outside of the cradle and used it on the cams. Repurposed a steel bolt and made it work.

Took me a while to set the timing too. Wanted to make sure it was right and not off a tooth or anything. I’m happy with. I’ve put most of the motor back together now. Tomorrow I’ll get the clutch and transmission in and have it bolted up. Might even be able to fire it up and drive it home. Should be a good day if I work hard and quick.

Got the engine in today but little things really held me up. Finding little connectors and the transmission took a little to get in too. And then connecting the line later and blah, blah, blah. If anyone ever decides to do something like this get a friend to help. It makes it much more enjoyable.

Its a good job you have access to all that garage equipment, the same project without it would be very, very difficult.

I got the car back together today. Started her up and got misfire codes and the clutch pedal is stuck to the floor. I obviously have to bleed the slave because it leaked the fluid when I pulled the trans. I’ll get that done tomorrow and I hope that is the real problem with that. Cleared the misfire, turns out I didn’t connect the #2 injector. Still have to put the intake manifold back in but feeling better now. Thermostat is leaking and has been a steady problem. Luckily I have a spare one here that I’ll throw in tomorrow as well that should get her running. Fingers crossed. I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel. This was a difficult one man job, at least for someone with no experience.

You done very well Edgar, no mean task for anyone to be honest , you have done very well chap and you can sleep easy knowing exactly what's been done and its been done properly , unlike taking it to a garage and hoping they do it all properly.

Thanks Rob. There is a definite sense of assurance and satisfaction since I did it myself. Plus I know exactly where to look if something is not right.

Sun was out today, well for a short while so did a few jobs on the old bus.
Ran VCDS after having rear offside door electrical issues recently, noticed that the indicators were not flashing on lock and on closer inspection the door wasn't locking.
Vcds reporting electric circuit failure , intermittent and also glass break sensor-open circuit intermittent.
Add to the mix the door sometimes still will not unlock full stop meant time to look further into things, door card off and nothing to account for it, checked the loom from door pillar plug right through the loom with nothing either.
put it all back and its all working fine again, maybe an issues with the central conv module but i'll see how things go for now.
Gave the old bus a good old shampoo and set , and for a 12 year old bus she brush's up very well, almost to good to part with now, and love my S4 mirror covers
not brilliant pics so don't flame me just yet.lol
