Im after an RNS-E Unit.

What is the best one to get?

I heard that ones with the Media button had a better LCD?

Is there any other benefits on the newer model?

yup media button equipped have high res screen, faster processor, better SD card function and few other bits...well worth sourcing one of these if you can

The RNS-E prior to the media button only allows 2x 2GB memory cards (some 4gb SD cards will work but are like finding hens teeth), the media button version I understand can support up to 2x16gb cards? Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Other than that it has a higher resolution screen and some posh silver dials...

No Dude, it doesn't play normal DVD's. A DVD drive/interface would be needed to do this. I've seen them on Ebay.de for around £400.00.

Same again I believe, an additional interface would be required. I had Satnav, TV tuner, rear view camera, DVD player etc in my last car, but it was aftermarket Pioneer stuff. I'd love to do the same with the Audi, but like you, I'd want to do it all OEM this time and that could be preeeeetty expensive, lol.

yer for sure, oem or not going to bother, also aftermarket would mean i lose my bluetooth which is so useful. I couldnt live without it now tbh.

I saw a MY11 with the Piano Black screen surround go for £470 on Ebay last week! I had been watching it out of interest, not looking to buy, but couldn't believe it when I saw the winning bid. Those things cost a fortune and most go for around the £1K mark.

DVD is a nice to have which you'll never use..... for one in the main it wont work whilst driving without vid in motion (dont know if its possible on RNS-E - Nige?) - so when are you going to watch a DVD in ya car or indeed TV.... completely pointless unless you enjoy parking up and watching a 4 inch screen randomly

TBH I have never felt a need for dvd, now we have Issy then yes for rears only but on a Touran probably, but not up front, kinda pointless overall, even whilst waiting for someone which tbh happens in a blue moon, but allows me 5 minutes of shut eye which I dont get often these days lmfao.

VIM is possible on mk1 with a software addition & hardware, mk2 is still in the wind with someone saying they'd cracked it, but this may require an eprom reprogam, but if it has a checksum routine or the like, it may overwrite any changes that are made with what its supposed to be, I dont know enough about electronics or these to really know how they do it, I do know how the SDS hack is done 1 way on mk2's.

Ill have to ensure my RNS-E isnt faulty and it ejects so i can insert something a bit more relevant to the ambience i am trying to create. S line black headlining does help darken things up and the red lighting is perfect!

Anyway. About the RNS-E. I've been swaying about these for the last 2 months, really wanted one so I got a mk1 and was really disappointed when I encountered complications with the deal. But as the search has went on I've been thinking about what the RNS-E really offered and to be honest I'm now struggling to find a reason why it's worth the expense, especially for a MK2 unit. It just seems such a limited piece of kit when compared to comparable units in lesser cars and is especially poor value for money when compared to some of the after market stuff.
