What's in your car?

I'm thinking of buying a radar detector after seeing my friend's snooper work in his IS200, do any of you have 1 too? There are so many available I don't know which 1 to buy. I want 1 that works well and shows me my mph too. Any recommendations?

Also if you have a cool gadget in your car, let us know, we might not know we need it until we hear about it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

I don't mean to state the obvious but only GPS detectors show mph! My brother has got one and it is ace. I would definately get a GPS one (he's got road angel) and then a cheaper radar one. No point with laser. A radar is constantly emmitting radio waves to find the car. A laser operator knows ur there and just uses a laser to tell your speed. So once it's gone off your ******! Unless you can break quicker than the speed of light!!!!

I don't usually speed, it's just for the occasional slip if I did 43 on a 40 road kind of thing, you know some of these damn cameras do snap if u overdo by 1-2 mph. Evil that the govt privatised the cams... they might as well privatise the police force... that way they might actually stop some dangerous drivers.

The road angel is excellent but you need laser protection as well. So basically you need a laser diffuser (which gives you 5 seconds to adapt your speed before the SS can get a reading off you) and a GPS system to tell you about SPEC's, Truvelo and Gatso.
The laser detector you get with Road Angel isn't a lot of good if the police aren't targetting someone ahead of you, i.e. if you have a clear road ahead then by the time the detector tells you it's too late. A diffuser provides you with a safety net. Wire the diffuser in to the "remote on" on your stereo, so you can turn it off if you get pulled. The police can do you for using one unless you can convince them it is used as a garage door opener. This is a real grey area legally, but they must be able to prove you were trying to obstruct them in their duty. Chances are they will just target the next car coming along.
I don't see the point of having a GPS system without a diffuser. How p*ssed off are you going to be after spending £320 on Road Angel and then get done by a mobile "safety" unit with a hair dryer.
Everyone knows that on the motorway speed has nothing to do with safety, everybody does at least 85mph and it is perfectly safe unless you're a moron or driving an HGV.

99% of deaths on motorways are caused by HGV's or falling asleep at the wheel, but they still insist that 86mph in a modern car is an endorsable offence. Detectors are no longer a tool only used by persistent speeders, they are a vital tool to enable concientious drivers from keeping their licences, especially drivers who do a lot of business miles.

OK guys, help out a yank from the states.

1. What do you mean by: SPEC... or: Truvelo... or: Gatso???

2. The only "diffuser" I know of is a plate that fits over the front license plate that spreads the laser spectrum causing the rebound to be "diffused". What kind of diffuser is wired?

3. And lastly, what the heck is HGV?

For perspective... In the states, we have to worry about radar (X, K, and Ka band), and of course laser. There are some cameras being mounted on some roadways, but they are coupled with stationary X band radar guns. At some toll booths, there are cameras to catch toll violators, too.
There are two top contenders for dealing with these issues: the Escort Passport 8500 ($299) and the Valentine One ($399).

HGV = Heavy Goods Vehicle....(eg Truck or 18 wheeler in the US)

I've got a Bell 550 and a Origin B2 and I am very happy with the protection offered - saved me a couple of times.

The UK is obsessed with speeding, or "safety enforcement" as they prefer to call it. Safety my ****, the number of cameras has increased 10 fold in the last 5 years, but, surprise surprise, the number of casulaties and accidents has continued to rise as well. Doesn't look like they really work does it?
So why are they continuing to deploy them at our expense?
What gets me is that all the new style front facing camera's (Truvelo & SPEC's) don't catch motorbikes - the biggest speeding offenders and the drivers with highest mortality rate.

GPS is definately the way forward, I have a Road Angel (the new one) and t seems to do the job very well. Radar detectors do work but they go off all the time and when they eventually detect a GATso (on either side of the road) they continue to go off for ages afterwards. The Road Angel only detects camera's on your side of the road and as soon as you pass one it stops beeping.

The Target LRC100 laser diffuser (which I have as well), is wired as it is powered. It is the size of a match box and fits underneath your licence plate.
It essentially detects a laser beam and returns it's own beam so the gun can't get a reading. After 5 seconds it switches off so that the gun can get a second reading. It gives you 5 seconds to warn you then adjust your speed accordingly. You really need this as well as a GPS system (even with laser detection) as if you are the only car being targetted then the laser detector will be too late to avoid prosecution.
