I'm looking at this site https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/brake-discs for my replacement discs, but it lists different parts for my 2010 S4 Avant. I don't want to order the wrong ones, so which ones do I choose?
It's there anything wrong with the standard Pagid discs and pads? I've seen Red Stuff pads recommended, but they don't sell them on this site.

Secondly, is there a good guide for changing discs and pads? I've not done anything like this for a long time, but was going to try and do it on Saturday (I have basic tools, nothing specialist)

I got the yellow brake warning come up 3 days ago, so need doing soon, although Audi said my rears were 65% worn about 2 months ago (no mention of the fronts), but they also said there was a lip on the discs

The rear discs are a lot easier to do with VCDS due to the electronic handbrake, other than that no special tools needed at all, no different to changing brakes on any other car.

Be careful with Pagid pads, I put a set in on mine and had awful squealing, apparently they have a few different compounds and some don't have the anti squeal stuff in, they're very dusty as well. red stuff pads don't suffer from this issue. Pagid discs all around on mine and no problems

On lesser cars I've used Pagid discs with no problems, I've only ever found that some Textar and/or Pagid pads cause squealing because they are not exactly what the car manufacturer specifies or uses at the factory, this is where missing out anti-squeal shims can cause annoyance, what ECP/GSF and their associated companies, and others tend to do is to only stock a "short" selection of brake pads that cover most of the market, and mainly in that "short" selection there will be some very basic Pagid etc offerings, so that in my experience is what causes squealing. I emailed TMD Friction about this and they could only offer me the correct pads FOC as obviously they can not control or influence what these big outlet want to sell us.

The size discs fitted to your car should appear as a 3 digit code on a label stuck to the boot floor and in the service book. I used Pagid disc/pads on a variety of cars - never had any problems of squealing. But I agree they create a lot of dust.

Many owners of high performance RS and BMW M cars like the EBC Redstuff brake pads.

Tips that come to mind from my DIY experiences are:-
1) Removing the little screw holding the disc in place is often the most troublesome bit of the job.:redface new:
2) The discs often stick to the hub - what works for me is a tiny bit of WD40 in the wheel nut holes and a few sharp taps with a 4lb hammer
3) You might need an extra bit of leverage to remove the carrier bolts, torque wrench to tighten them and some blue locktite on the thread
4) Copper grease is a bit old fashioned, gets washed away and can interfere with ABS sensors - most use these newer brake lubricants these days
5) Clean the hub surface so there is a nice flat surface between it and the new disc.
6) Clean and lubricate the caliper slider bolts where appropriate - the ATE style ones get caked with black carbon which can cause sticking - I find wire wool works well.

I've a set of genuine front disc and pads in the garage that have less than 1000 miles on them and minimal wear if you want them for £140 posted. The front discs retail at £167 each. Pads retail at £130 for set.

Carista app can release rear brake pads. Cheaper than VCDS!

Can't find any code written down, but I got this off Piston heads

Front brakes for the S4 come in 2 flavours - they don't look to be very different, but the pads aren't the same so you do need to make sure you get the right ones. The changeover is 20/6/2011 so I expect yours has the earlier discs which are a whole 0.5mm thinner! As I said, pads are different so it does matter.

Fronts - 345x29.5mm - 8k0 698 151h - RRP £135.12 each
Pads - 8k0 698 151h - £123.65

Rears - 330x22mm - 4h0 615 601k - £114.18 each
Pads - 8k0 698 451g - £85.10
Set - discs and pads - 8k0 098 601h - £284.45 (saves just less than £30)

Hope that helps

However none of this discs on the car parts site match that, unless I'm being thick, which is possible, as I have man-flu!

****! I've ordered 345mm and according to the code 1LJ, mine are 312mm. Why make it so ****** difficult to buy stuff!

I sent you a link from an A3 thread - I assumed those 3 digit codes were universal - which seems logical. I would re-check whether 1LJ for an S4 = 312mm. That seems surprisingly small for an S4 to me. My fronts are 312mm.

Just doing a few "rough and ready" ebay searches for Audi S4 1LJ on ebay seems, in most cases, to throw up 345mm front discs - if which case I apologise for misleading you with the 1Lj/A3 chart - could VAG make it more complicated? :glee:

345mm is the S4 front disc diameter

Cheers for the help guys. Gave my chassis number to Audi and they confirmed 345x29mm for the front
