S4 Grille de chroming - clips

Had anyone managed to successfully take the chrome parts off a B8 S4 grille?
There are so many clips and they are extremely brittle. Is it best just to mask up before painting?
What about the chrome strips can they be removed without destroying the clips?
I just thought that it would be easier to strip and paint the reassemble to make a better job of it.
I have slate grey grill and I am painting it Gloss Black.

I would of thought it had been easier to just buy a gloss black grille as it'll be a lot of work rubbing it down and prepping it before painting?

I already have a used S4 grille to fit to my SLine 3.0TDI Quattro which comes with a gloss black SLine grille. So I want the paint the one I have and save the cost of a new one. Thanks anyway.
