Hi this is my first thread, thought i had major problems late last night car started to judder, no power, and the engine light was flashing, i thought "this has got to be bad", anyway phoned out the RAC, the guy turned up plugged in his computer and went straight for the coil pack on cylinder 3, fitted in 5 min and i was away, 85,000 miles on the car which isn`t bad from what i`ve been reading on here. 2004 A4 1.8T S-line

Welcome to the Audi life of the failed Coilpack!
Mine went last week too for the first time, I **** it too.
I ended up changing all four, dont wanna go through that again...

I'm on my 6th Replacement coilpack! 146,000 though. I always have one in the glovebox now, at least they are easy to change and only £21 from Eurocarparts.

Might have to order my next ones from there then, i was charged £37 by the rac patrol and £29.75 by Audi Liverpool for 1.

I paid £29 each for mine from Stealers and have the 3 which I were ok are in my Boot for Emergency.

Euro wanted £28 each but wasnt in stock!!

How easy are these to change on an S4 as I think i may have on on the way out as its a bit lumpy between 1500 and 2000 RPM if i accelerate slowly..... Does this sound familiar???

I've always had the engine symbol flash during a failure and it is obvious only three cylinders are working. Bit lumpy - spark plugs may need changing?

Yeah sounds familiar, I had one go on my S4 but it was a bit lumpy for a week or so beforehand, this is because the insulation deteriates and starts to arc around a bit. Easy to change cost about £30.00 from Audi (i would spend the extra and get genuine bits). gets a bit more expensive when you need to change Eight though

Any online guides available to do this?? :uhm:
And how do you know which one is causing the problems??

The red/orange plastic caps pop off take these off and you will notice some slight blackening around the faulty (if it is faulty) coil.

To change them take off the the plastic caps then pull out the coil and replace should takeabout 5 mins.

A moment of genius young man. thank you kindly.

If they are all "slighty blackened", I know where you live..........:gun2:

Any pictures of a slightly blackened one as I am now going to go and look at my car, and being the gloom monkey that I am, they will all "look" black....:Flush:

Man i feel bad.

My A4 1.8T 2003 was juddering under load 2 weeks ago. I shelled out £219 for the stealer to change coil pack 3. Man i was robbed. Diagnosis was what i needed, wish i'd called the AA out now to diagnose the fault then i could have done the job myself.

Yep mine went as well last week. Looked like ones been replaced before as well when I lifted the bonnet and the cars only done 24K but I know it's a common fault (happens a lot on Golfs too) and at least it's easy to fix and not too expensive.

Got an aftermarket part from a local spares place for £25 which works ok but the warning light has remained on. I've been told by a specialist that this often happens with non genuine coils as they tend to give the ECU an error code even though they are ok and it's best to get a genuine one as they tend to last longer too supposedly?

Stu

Does anyone have any pictures and instructions of how to remove the coil pack please?

Also just read on this forum that the coilpacks are warranty'd by Audi for 5 years?? Is this true??

Sooo easy mate, You'll see, Just take of your Plastic engine cover and simple pull them out!Job done..

Thats them. They just unplug at the back (you may need a flathead screwdriver or something to unclip the plug) then you just lift them out! Simple!

Mine went on on the S3 yesterday 2mins to replace!

Just tried to lift the black clip and they are very tight and sound like tey will split if i try to hard. Looks like one has been replaced as one of the clips is already broken.

Think i may just stick to my day job!!

Hmmm... they should just come out. Did you try unplugging and lifting the coil out at the same time. There is some resistance but nothing should be splitting! Unless the S4 is different to the S3 in that respect? They dont look like the screw in ones!! Sure someone will be along shortly to clarify.

Correct but incorrect depends on day you're having.

No keep at it till you done the job!! See above :footy:

Same problem here. I'm fitting my first coil pack right now and the clips are so brittle and fragile i've snapped two already. Car is 6yrs old.
