Suzuka grey S3 Build thread

Are people comparing apples with apples here;

R26R is the lightweight, part stripped Megane, and it weighs 1230 Kg, complete with a weight adding and chassis stiffening roll cage.
S3 weighs 1455 Kg (both according to the manufacturer)

Renault removed over 135 Kg from the R26 to ger the 'R', as they added weight back in with the 'cage.

So you have to remove 100+ Kgs of 'stuff' from the S3 to get to basic R26 weight.
To get to R26R weight you have to remove 225 Kgs...
...not going to happen.

Personally I think weight saving is a great idea...but sadly an S3 isn't the best starting point as they are needlessly heavy as hell to start with.

Well....good luck!

In a little while you should have a car that admittedly looks a lot better than my GpN Escort did,but will be getting close for noise!

Please don't think I'm having a go.....I'm not...all I'm saying is that there are easier ways and probably cheaper ways of getting your car to go faster, and after living with a completely stripped out car(zero soundproofing,no carpets,no rear seats, lightweight everything that was possible etc) it can be a bit wearing on anything other than short runs.

Mine would almost have made your ears bleed, with the engine, straight cut gears,2 fuel pumps and all the other bits.....even the heater(haha) had been lightened by Ford, and my friendly engine builder removed the ABS as being "not for real drivers"....or real men....I cant remember which:laugh:

P.S....removing the spare may seem like a good idea, but you'd better have runflats if the plod find you.

Fair comment mate , NOt taken to heart as your not being a d**k about it .
Well tbh i dont drive facing the rear so as far as driving the car facing forward nothing looks diffrent , Got nice heated seats and big recaro buckets .. Its only a suffer for the people who want a lift...
And stops my sills gettin scratched to death from idiots who dont kno how to get into a car or wearing heels .

Lol i just thort -i wonder wat bowfer would have to say about this ..

Exhaust de-cat non resonated should save around 20kgs .. (not sure exactly how much a cat and 2nd silencer weighs ?
Evoms intake posibly another 5kgs (not sure on weight of heat shield)Stock intake weighs 7.2kgs

I'm not sure how much the stock system weighs by comparison with a system like the Milltek, but on their site,if you add it up,the system saves 5.25kgs in all.

Likewise with the induction system,if the stock system weighs 7.2kgs,you're going to have a hard time saving 5kgs off that.

I think the main advantage of either is just the greater air/exhaust gas flow, especially with a remap added in.

Just been on the phone to charlie at milltek and he thinks its gunna b far more than 5.25 kgs savings .. Im going by what ive been told alex im not making figures up to look good .

And yer i think i figured out what an intake does . But its also alot lighter ..

Whatever else,I hope I'm not a d**k !

I got more than enough of that from chavs trying to race the Escort.

It didnt have heated seats.......carbon/kevlar instead(as that would have been too comfortable in the view of the guy who built it),and my wife never even sat in it in the time I owned it.

You will at least have plenty of room for luggage, which I didnt as the boot was occupied by a bag tank, fuel pumps, water injection system and a roll cage!

Uh oh, now your asking for a blunt opinion with Bowfers voice, lol, this should be interesting from him

Well...I'm pleased with that too then as I've just had one of their systems put on mine.
It is a bit noisier than the stock system, but a bit of that may well be added induction noise as well......very nicely made, tidy welds etc.
It's good to find well made aftermarket systems,as some yrs back I was suckered into buying a genuine handcrafted system for my Cosworth Sierra.....it was only when I had it replaced that I saw what the guy had done with some old bits of steel pipe.

P.S....I wasnt trying to be clever about the induction system...I'm sure you know what it's for,it was only the savings i was going on about!

lol, that did make me laugh, there's always one a day that makes me grin from side to side

Hey its his car so leave him to it, personally if I had a new S3 like this last thing I'd do is strip it down to save 75-100kg's, but at least he's got a bigger boot for shopping now, mines always full of tools so shopping is always fun, especially when the damn coke can explodes

M3 Coupe - 1495KG
M3 CSL - 1460KG... Pointless??

F430 Coupe - 1450KG
F430 Scuderia - 1350KG.. Pointless??

Porsche GT3 - 1395KG (same as C2 before anyone says this is already light weight)
Porsche GT3 RS - 1375KG.. Pointless??

Laborghini Gallardo E-gear - 1430KG
Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera - 1330KG.. Pointless??

I think you get what im doing here..

Both the he base weight of the standard F430 and M3 Coupe is more than the standard S3, with the Gallardo only 20KG less and the in the GT3's case 55KG, so why bother as many people have already said, its too heavy to start with??

Also the maximum weight loss from the standard to factory light weight car is 100KG.. Alex will be getting at least 100KG out of the S3, if not more..

If an manufacturer does it with there cars then they are applauded.. If an individual try's to do the same then they get a load of stick..

Hopefully this post will open a few peoples eyes to the reality..

Jonny

I think there's Stick & then there's Opinions Jonny, he has stated very clearly if you read the whole thread not just a few posts that "if you dont approve dont bother bitching", then why start a thread if you dont want all types of reactions good or bad, its a forum, thats what its all about opinions, but what throws spanner into the works which is why few of us are confused is the fact its for sale in 2 places, so why do it, wouldnt you agree, very strange no?

In reality the chances of making a profit are slim to non imo, Firstly the s3 isnt the kind of car people are dying to buy!!! In addition to that you never recoup the cost of mods and if anything they de-value a car.

If he has done with the view that "i will mod the car and advertise it for what it owes me" then great. He drives the car he wants with the small chance some fool will pay the high price.

If we all did the same it would be a boring place but i certainly wouldnt do it for financial reasons, nor would i choose an s3 as a weekend toy.

996 turbo for that mmmmm

I'm sure he'll clarify if he feels the need to, but hey his car so he can do what he wants, I'm not knocking just saying seemed strange & not something personally I would do to such a nice car

& I have to agree, if he gets 34k for his car in this enviroment he'd be ****** lucky, think maybe when listing the car he had downed a few or smoking something, I mean Jonny listed his car for 26k & look what he'd done to it, if I had a choice it'd be Jonny's everyday full stop & nearly 10k cheaper with a shed load more power which the weight wouldnt even be a concern

Oh & it has the rear seats, lol

Hang on I'm really confused here.

You buy a car, strip out the back seats and then put it on sale? Why? Are you selling it or not?

I can understand him wanting to make a lightweight version of the S3. Fair play. But 10 kilos saving from a battery which is designed for racing is just pointless. No matter how much it cost it's still nowhere near the capacity of the standard battery. Anyone with knowledge of battery theory or experience of a bike that doesn't like the cold will understand what I mean.

I know enough about cars to know that less weight can be a lot better than more power as the weight itself comes into play a lot more on corners. And 70Kg is quite a lot. But what is the final goal here? A huge turbo too? The complete works on the engine to make it the most powerful in the land? Or a slightly tuned S3 with no back seats? You might aswell have bought a TT-S.

As for making stupid comments. This is a forum mate, if you can't stand a little heat you need to log off and take a breather before you get yourself upset. I would say that suggesting that people only make comments because they're jealous that you have an S3 is pretty childish. And suggesting people on an Audi forum can't afford to buy a battery that costs $149.99 is so stupid I almost thought you were making a joke!

Oh my god . just STFU ... Staz and nhn serious p**s off
. Take ur thorts onto another thread .

Your the fuking joke mate .... Posting on the battery thread and humiliating me ...

Thanks for the abusive PM mate but you can keep your comments to yourself in future.

This is the point - Mitch78 I know you're enjoying playing madalex's "minder" but what you're missing is that his totally unnecessary, egotistical and narcissistic "don't post if you don't like what I'm doing you dicks" attitude has made people want to wind him up. And some are doing a grand job of it too. Its developed into quite a funny thread now.
