Hi guys.

Afer some advise for a mate.

His car starts on the first click of the key as opposed to the dash lights/stereo coming on and then starting on the click after.

Going to go vagcom it later but what could be the prob :S

His is a A3, pretty much the same as mine.

Cheers

I'm going with barrel Kaz atm given the mechanics of it

Thought it was the barrel but not so sure as when i cleared the fault codes, it started working as normal :S

I got it on vagcom and this came up:

3 Faults Found:
00885 - Ignition Switch (D) Terminal 50
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit
00884 - Ignition Switch (D) Terminal X
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit
00576 - Terminal 15
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent

They've cleared and not returned and car starts on the 2nd click just as it should.

Off to do more research but hope it was a one off :S

Yeah barrel or steering module to me, if returns then I'd check barrel 1st as this sets the positions for power to be sent down the different wires, there's a small loom/connector hidden above the steering module with 6-7 wires, when you turn key it turns on power to certain parts of the steering module to signal car state etc, so 1st instance barrel for me, either way its only those 2 that control these parts so not to bad overall mate to get at, only problem is if audi can supply just the barrel for his keys, if so then its easy-ish but of course this also has affects on immo as it uses inductive signals to key & back for immo to work for car start, should be ok as this just signals doesnt hold key(scuse pun) immo systems.

sounds like a bit of an **** ache to do :S

I'll check the power that goes down each wire now and when (if) it starts to play up again, see how it differs!

Probs is the barrel but working fine now - just a hope a wire or soemthing from that area moved causing it to short on the first click but its moved away and wont touch again!

Thanks for your help mate - Did you get your turbo sorted?

Nah its not as bad as our dreaded turbo work huh, trust me nowhere near as bad.

Yeah sorry didnt get back to you, I was chatting to my mate tuner & he said since you're doing the turbo best to hybrid which I was considering anyway, so I got hybrid sent over last week, not fitted yet, sorry I should have replied so apologies mate, just with everything going on I forgot.

I have to flush the damn intercooler out, did you do yours or just cleaned out your pipes leading to it, any advice?

My only concern now is the head cracking if I upgrade, that would be 2k also so for me its a little worrying given others with same head have had issues, we'll see huh.

No worries mate - you made the right decision by going hybrid! the turbos are ******** on ours and idid want to hybrid mine but dont plan to keep her that long to make it worth while!

And yes, intercooler pipes were cleaned out (well, i changed the turbo to intercooler one as per the T&Cs of the turbo warranty) and the itercooler was drained of all oil. The intercooler pipe was removed and then the car was jacked up from the opposite side so the bits at the bottom were removed.

I then flushed the whole engine with a new oil filter and cheap Duckhams 5w30 oil and ran it for a few minutes and drained it. Then put some new Castrol Edge 5w30 Oil with filter and ran that for a few hundred miles. i then changed that again a few days ago and car seems spot on! Just got to make sure no bits get through to the engine as it could damage the head/valves/piston/piston seals!

TBH - wouldnt worry too much about the head. It is quite a rare occurance and most members have been fine! From the guys with our engines, i think its about a 2/10 probabililty of it happening. Cars hey - flippin **** ache!

I'll take a closer look at my mates barrel - its started doing it again. Thanks for your help on it - may have to nag you further if i get stuck! lol

Cheers mate!

Hey nag away mate happy to help if I can as you have me.

Got the seals etc today so will be tackling this over the next 2-3 days, think intercooler out is best as found bits along the route, peace of mind for me, some of the metal bits were actually stuck in the rubber pipe that connects to the turbo, short little ****** & expensive, 50 euros for that & its short with 1 bend, but guessing pressure must have been extreme to lodge them into the rubber & stay there, thank feck for that as it probably helps to save any damage along route, we'll see.

So you didnt remove your intercooler then, just literally jacked up one side then cleaned the pipe ends out?

I got 2 filters & will do as you have 2 oil fills, sensible & I also am taking extra precautions & removing sump to empty/clean out & have new sealer & sump plug bolt to put back so should be cool, I hope.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated & anytime need advice/help, please do ask even though from what I read on your posts you are very knowledgable, so maybe dont need me, lol.

I think thats why the turbo specialists made me change the pipe - mine didnt have any turbo peices wedged in it as far as i know but they are well worth changing..

And no, intercooler wasnt removed. Just pipes removed and tilted and then flushed out with cheaper oil. For me, there werent any pieces in the flush oil but then again, i jsut pulled out of Tesco and it went pop and turned it off straight away. I was probs doing around 5mph ifeven that..

Having the sump off is probs a good idea but the turbo pieces only made it into the intercooler - they didnt get past it as the oil in the pipe of the otherside was particle free.

While your at it, flush out as much of the oil in the exhaust as poss. Mine had a good litre of oil in it and smoked for a good few hundred miles after and still smoked abit even after i sold it. When i first started it and drove it, it was like i put the wrong fuel in but after 2 miles or so, there was just bits of white smoke. Then, after a few hudndred miles, i decided to boot it and tons of grey smoke came out and after around 20 times of booting it, all the smoke cleared.

Hope it all works out (there is no reason why it shouldnt though) and let me know how you get on and i am more than happy to help further if needs be.

And me, knowledgeable? Just plenty and plenty of research really :p

Should be giving that barrel a shot next week - will let you know it goes!

Cheers
