A story and a question for everyone,
I was on the way to the gym the other day with my mate when a brand spanker of an M3 appeared right behind me at a roundabout. As this monster was right on my tail I decided to open up the little S3 (8P) out of the roundabout and to my surprise, it started to pull away! We started to approach some lights when it began to close the gap. At the lights the gleaming white M3 with 2 lads onboard pulled up alongside me, game on ;)
Red, amber, green….all hell broke loose! Now I knew my S3 was a machine but the little fella pulled away again and started to go in front!! I’m not going to say the speed but eventually the £60,000 kicked in and it went past but at the next set of lights the 2 lads wound down their window and said “that’s quick, is it mapped and what’s it running?!”
That’s the story (it was an excellent experience!!) but here is the question,
My S3 has a Neuspeed Induction Kit and a Milltek (non res) cat-back exhaust fitted. It was good to beat the M3 away from the lights but it would have been even better if it hadn’t eventually passed me! This got me thinking if I went to a stage 2 remap (with all the extra’s that requires) how much extra power would this give and is it worth it?
I estimated the further upgrade (which would require some serious saving as a service is due around Xmas) to roughly as follows:
Milltek Large bore downpipe + high flow cat - £640.14
Forge Twinintercooler - £660.18
Revo Stage 2 software - £50
Labour - £198
Total = £1548.32

Cheers,
Mike

Hi mike you dont need a intercooler on stage 2 revo, just get the full miltek, auto tech internals,rs4 pressure value and the software....to stage 2+ revo....And start saving for an uprated clutch.....

Surely the Quattro would of given you a head start at the lights... Trying to get down 400bhp through the rear wheels cleanly is no mean feat!

Stage 1 in an S3 is 300bhp isn't it?

Stage 1 is about 300 bhp , best to check your torque figures to the m3,s ,but get the revs high on pull off a mapped s3 is something else....

Thanks s3kel,

I noted those items as thats what Revo recommended for Stage 2 software...?

Sorry to be thick but whats "auto tech internals" and I've not heard of the RS4 pressure valve.

I also forgot to mention in my above post, I always though prior to going to Stage 2 etc that I would need to also upgrade to a competition clutch. Wouldn't you lot agree?

Hi mate , auto tech is uprated fuel pump, and most members get the vaule as the spray pattern is better going to stage 2+ , i,m still on a standard oem clutch no slips on stage 2+(nearly 1 year ) ,but then again i only use the car on weekends...If i was looking to get fmic is would be proalloy all day long..:)

And yeah, I had the revs high at start up so the thing went off like a rocket!

Revo stage 1 said to be 300BHP on the 8P so along with the exhaust & induction kit i'll be on a bit more :)

"Spray pattern, FMIC".... Im lost with all this jargon, I'm relatively new to the world of tuning but not to driving ;)

I love my s3 , but the sound of the m3 is something else....:)

Who did your map? :)I use statlers in sheffield....

I had the work done at ADS in Preston, didn't take long to get there and back from Manchester

I've always had the impression that Stage 1 maps deliver 310-320 bhp; I'm planning on doing an induction kit at the same time as the map to eke out as much as possible from S1.
And someone please tell me how best to launch a manual S3?! I keep lurching forward then just lagging for a second or two, but I've seen and heard of people taking off like they've been fired out of a gun! Tips?
Loving the M3-baiting and sorry for the thread hijack...

Hi batch just slip the clutch as fast as you can :)

Batch - Get the revs up high (you may get a few looks from other drivers) and then when the lights turn green release the clutch and "bang!" Sounds to me like your releasing your clutch to quickly. A lot of people fail at the lights cos if their driving technique (no offence intended), you may also have seen/heard DSG vehicles with launch control. They just do what I've told you to do automatically so 0-62 they're always down on paper as being a bit quicker.

Mike

Cheers boys, I'll give it a go at some point. I do also like letting the boy racer have the first few yards, then burying the throttle and disappearing!!

I can confirm from Shark's RR that a Stage 1 is 300 bhp. I have to say I love it in my DSG. But i have to agree with s3kel, M3's sound stunning when they rev.
I would never have one as I need AWD for where I live up a hill! LOL. My old mapped Subaru didn't make me smile like my S3 does :D

Milltek Large bore downpipe + high flow cat - £640.14
Forge Twinintercooler - £660.18 dont need it
Revo Stage 2 software - £50
Labour - £198
Total = £1548.32

What it cost me and the gains to stage 2.....

stage 2 roughly is 330bhp

It cost me a total of £1,034. + £8 for ducting i put in yesterday to keep it cooler...
This includes-

Full turbo back miltek 100 cell non res exhaust
Neuspeed P-Flo
Shark stage 2 map.+ the patch.
Including all labour. (just to fit the exhaust £100, which is included in my total figure above)

Interestingly enough, i had a play with an S4 the other night, not the newest one, the one before. Think he was an inch from my bumper.....then i thought i best 'be off' and he sat there like he was on the brakes! I was loooong gone!

:)

I'm calling bulls**t, S1 S3 vs a New M3, no chance. He must drive like Miss Daisy!

In right hands I am pretty sure an E92 M3 will see off a Stage 1 S3 in anything other than snow or pishing rain.
The beauty of the S3 (for me anyway) is that average Joe can use all of the power pretty much all of the time so can be a bit of a giant killer in certain circumstances.

Seriously, the S3 dealt it a spanking ;) That is until we got near treble figures then the M3 went past.

that price is right...i might switch from forge twintercooler to proalloy one....

Sorry to hijack guys, but an uprated FMIC is next on my list of purchases and you've named two of the most popular choices - the Pro Alloy and the Forge Twintercooler.

I get all of my mods supplied and fitted by AMD in Essex, and they advised me to get this - the Airtec FMIC:

Auto Specialists - New for 2012 Airtec’s Intercooler upgrade for the VAG 2.0 Petrol TFSI - Pro-Series Satin Black

Have any of you guys heard of the Airtec FMIC, and if so, what are you thoughts?

One thing I have noticed is that all replacement FMIC's seem to cost around about the same, which tends to suggest there might not be that much of a difference from one FMIC to another...

never heard of Airtec 2.0 tfsi intercooler, but it looks nice, and it's 100 pounds cheaper than proalloy. AMD does amazing work and if they recommended it then it's probably worth.

Yep, at the right time i should think it would, the right time being lots of bends where if the M3 were to request all power....it would simply lay it all down and be no further forward.....

But hell, M3's are so BORING inside, lovely looking car from outside, but i have to like where i sit, they are all so bland!

Airtec work with AMDTuning, and are also doing something which will be on my car soon,so I would be perfectly happy to go with what AMD have advised.

I know the Twintercooler works, but I have never liked the idea of an add-on device, where one big intercooler will do an equivalent job.

Is there a sense of insecurity, lack of achievement or anxiety about self worth here? Or just an infantile need to outwit and outperform oiks driving BMW YOBmobiles? Surely however much money you throw at a car somebody someday somewhere is going to pull up at the lights, grin stupidly and leave you in the weeds?
And then there is the ever stealthy presence of Plod in, say, an unmarked Skoda Octavia who if not booking you, will verbally wipe the floor with you making you feel a real prat, and worse, all in the presence of your mates or an adoring girlfriend.

I don't care for all that stuff....the only place for racing is on the track.

I was replying to the questions from s3kel and Kentkid.

Wafter - Im not encouraging street racing, it was a bit of a joke but more seriously a question based on tuning and performance.
If you've got nothing beneficial to add to the post then kindly refrain from further comments.

Thanks both, much appreciated! I figured the Airtec FMIC would probably be of a decent enough standard, I just hadn't heard it mentioned much on here...

I know it's off the original topic, but you won't go wrong with anything that AMDTuning recommend.

Agreed! They've been spot on so far, and long may it continue...

Thanks for the heads-up s3kel - I plan on getting the new FMIC in around a month from now, so I'll have a good search nearer the time! One thing though - if I do manage to find this group buy you mentioned, does it mean I'll have to create a new account over on golfmk5gti and pretend I have a GTI? ;-)

Hi mate there loads of audi members on that forum ,theres even a rs4 for sale over there..:)

I love my s3 , but the sound of the m3 is something else....:)

Sound without power will always make you look a pratt lets be honest & I've driven some M3's in the past & just as my S4 NA, it was stunning car but very lacklustre on power overall.

Ha, bet you got back to Manchester quicker than you got to Preston. That first post remap drive is always a special one.
