I have HD sat nav in my 8v saloon and very often when I get in the car I get "initializing" message on the screen for about 20 seconds... But this seems to be very random as to when it happens. For example I can park up, nip into the shop for 5 minutes, come out and it will show initializing when I start up again. Other times I can go to work, leave the car parked up for 10 hours or so, and when I come back it doesn't and is ready immediately. So it seems like it's not something which happens due to it being off for any significant time.
Do others see this?

Yeah mine can vary too. It's reading data off the remember card remember. Sometimes it takes about 5 seconds. Sometimes it takes up to 20secs.

It all depends on how much coverage it has at the time

That's exactly what I've found with mine in the morning, you get the Audi 'Splash Screen' and then the Nav "Initializing" process. In a way, it's no different to your average desktop/laptop computer when you boot it up from cold (not sleep/hibernate mode).

I find if you stop for a short time and turn the ignition off/key out (i.e. to fill up), when you power on again the Nav comes back instantly.

My theory being that when you switch off (thus MMI display goes off/retracts) the system goes into some sort of suspended mode which is time dictated. If no user input is given and/or ignition is started within a set period, then the system effectively shuts down. This would explain why after shorter periods the Nav comes back quickly, and yet say after a few hours we're back to the slower "Initializing" (20 sec) process.

Then again, I may be barking up completely the wrong tree.

Ditto mate....l think the MMI runs on for a wee while, but parked over night it shuts down completely...standard proceedure me thinks...for the old battery life saving

Ive seen the initializing screen but pay it no mind. my other asian luxury cars all needed time for the system to boot.

That'd the odd thing; it doesn't seem to matter for me. For example last night I parked up at home around 7 and then got in the car at 7.15 this morning and it came on immediately, no splash screen, no initializing or anything. So that's 12 hours. The other day I drove to my mums, switched the engine off whilst I nipped inside to grab my mail, came out and it went into initialization for ages whilst I sat on the drive waiting to put in my destination!
