Facelift Daytime Running Lights

Can someone confirm that the rear lights also come on when the DRL's are on? That was definitely the case on the TT, and I actually prefer the rear lights being on.

Any car I've had the DRLs are on their lonesome. No back lights at all.

Facelift cars get rear DRL's. No option to turn them off on the MMI or via the light switch.

Thanks for confirming... first time I've noticed it, having seen the reflection of them in a shop window this morning. The light switch illuminates differently from the TT as well. On the S3 the AUTO symbol lights up orange and side light symbol green to indicate the DRL's are on. The TT only ever showed Auto lit up orange when DRL's were on.

Fortunately for me, I was able to add this to my S4 with the carista app

I would imagine you can do this with VCDS on the 8V's PFL & FL but will need @DJAlix to confirm this

  • PFL = No Factory Rear Daylight Running Lights
  • FL = Factory Rear Daylight Running Lights
I am not sure how Audi have implemented this, coding or via hardwiring, as I am yet to have a FL car visit me / anyone send over their adaptations maps in order to see whats possible. Have been asking :(

Just been out and started mine, Auto was orange and both side/headlights were green. So all my lights were on!!! Not that dull either...hmmm.

Come and wash mine then lol

IF you have some time spare it would be great if you could create some adaptation maps of your control modules and then fire them over to me alex@vagcarcoding.com

Procedure:
  • Run up VCDS
  • Select Applications
  • Select Controller Channel Map
  • Controller Address = The number of the module you want to map out i.e. Central Electronics = 09
  • Tick Adaptations
  • Select CSV file
  • Leave all other settings "as is"
  • Select Go.
VCDS will now dump all the data for that module in to a .CSV file in the debug folder. Repeat for as many modules has you have :)

I believe the DRLs are there so that cars coming in the opposite direction are more likely to register that you're another moving vehicle on the road. If that's the case there would seem to be no need to have the tail lights illuminated in the same way.

What I have noticed however is that when the car is stationary, by virtue of the automatic handbrake (activated by coming to a halt), the brake lights remain lit even when you take your foot off the footbrake pedal. I can only imagine that this will sometimes be a bit tiresome for a following driver if the rather bright rear lights of modern Audis remain lit all the time in traffic queues and at the lights.

All done, hope it helps to sort some of the issues out.

Now, do you want a simple wash or do you need it waxed as well :chuncky:

This is only the case for cars with Hold Assist (and it switched on). This has been commented on a lot on this forum. If using HA you need to be aware and put the handbrake on if stopped for a considerable time. But that's no different from stopping and holding the car on the footbrake anyway.

Am I right in thinking that with PFL you can use VCDS to have the rear lights activated as DRL though?

There is one good reason to have the rears lit. All the numpties I encounter during my commute who drive on back roads with only DRL's in the semi dark who don't even know they've no back lights on and are virtually invisible to cars approaching from behind
:wtf:
All cars should have front AND rear DRL's as standard.

Good point!

After I had the TT serviced in June, the dealer put the headlights back to the Off position. Next day I drove through the Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow and on entering the tunnel the car chimed and put a message on the VC screen saying "Turn on Headlights"!!

Looking stupid is something which comes quite easy to me J lol.
I hear what you're saying but probably better looking weird in the summer and being safe in the winter / dark?

I honestly don't remember my rear lights being on before today, which was why I mentioned above about them being linked to the clock change...?

I've driven cars with the lights on at all times of day for the last 20 years. Since the govt. decided to hand driving licenses out like prescription antibiotics to every halfwit with a pulse, I think I need all the help I can get. Half the people I share the road with each day seem to have vision so bad they make Mr Magoo's visual acuity look like Steve Austin's.

Would be interested to hear from others with FL cars.
But I suppose if it's that dark, the car should have headlights on anyway.
Plus it gets dark at different times throughout the UK (for example) and even that varies depending on the weather so it'd be strange to simply rely on the time(?)

Exactly mate....Leds fade through use, just like any other light....

Don't think they do. Light emitting diodes use a physical process to generate light that lasts a very, very long time. I expect that they would last well beyond the life of the car as long as they were not broken by a physical shock or over heating.

Yep, really....

The lights stay on if it's dark, bright sunshine, dry or pouring with rain. The only time they seem to turn off is when you get out and lock it.

They do lose brightness through time, the spot leds in a headlight are no different from any other spot led diode....luminosity will deminish through use
