I’m for ever pressing the hide button for the screen every time I start the car why can’t it stay where is was when I switched off the ignition ie down.
I have mine down by default.....I only bring it up when I want to. :)

i got caught out by the cruise control. Unlike my old 8P it doesnt switch off when you dip the clutch. Dropping a few gears on a roundabout just causes it to shoot back to the set speed in the lower gear.

Yes up until my immediately previous car cruise control was always disengaged by changing gear, but then I actually found it a good thing when setting it in fifth and not needing to reset it when changing up to 6th.
Down changing wasn't an issue because I always braked first then selected the gear I wanted in one change.
Regarding cruise control in general.....I wouldn't have a car without it now. :)

I dislike nothing about my car, because l learnt from my first S3, options etc etc etc
I have The Carlsberg Audi S3 well in my opinion it is and l happy with it it still gives me a real buzz driving it and of course the upkeep of detailing it.

I bought a pfl s3 over a year ago. Really good spec including adaptive cruise, lane assist, high beam assist, blind spot assist, parking system plus with front and rear sensors, b&o sound and some other little goodies. Only thing I would like adding would be pan sunroof, apart from that, it’s got everything I would want.

My car was supposedly a demo car so that explains all the spec.

These systems annoy me, on car's generally. All the systems highlighted are part of the reason why driving standards are soo poor these days.

Adaptive cruise control. Set the distance, and you can drive from John O'Groats to Lands End without having to touch the throttle or brake (just as long as you're following another car). Problem. People don't bother concentrating as the car will slow down / accelerate for them. System fails? Crash !

Lane assist. Seriously, if you need the car to keep you in the lane you're supposed to be in, you really shouldn't have a driving licence. Problem. People don't concentrate at the wheel, as the car will keep you in lane. System fails? Crash !

High Beam assist. Are we really that F***ing lazy we can't even be bothered to switch our main beam on and off ourselves? These system never quite block out the oncoming car, and I often get dazzled by an oncoming car with these systems.

Blind spot assist. If you need the car to warn you that there is a car near by before you pull out, you shouldn't really have a licence. The systems aren't that good either, and no doubt many of the cars that pull out on you on a motorway are due to people just pulling out because the car hasn't beeped to say not to. System fails and doesn't spot a car, driver pulls out, and ........ crash !

Parking system plus. My S3 has parking sensors. That's fine. sometimes useful if there is a low fence behind, but mainly redundant, as I have eyes and thus are able to judge distance. But these new types of systems are hat'll park the car for you? Please. How the F*** did you pass your driving test if you can't even park?

All the above systems need not be in any car, as the person sat behind the wheel should be competent enough, that their right foot is the adaptive cruise control. Their spatial awareness is the lane assist and blind spot assist. There left hand is the high beam assist, and basic driver skill is the park assist.

The more people rely on these systems the more driving standards will fall. The more driving standards fall, the more people will want autonomous cars.

Sorry, but if all those systems are your priority when buying a car, then maybe you shouldn't really be driving in the first place.

Not having a go at Hamza, but just in general to people who rely on these system to get them from A to B without crashing.

Good post @wab172uk :)
I agree with it all apart from adaptive cruise control. I had it on a previous manual car and found it really quite useful.

Don't really see what your problem is, yes things fail .. although I haven't seen on the news that all VW cars are having to be serviced immediately because of major bugs in CC. It's the same as aircraft, automation is coming in to make things safer. Idiots will be idiots with or without driver assist features.

Adaptive cruise control. Extremely useful when driving long distances, yes it needs to be supervised, but it makes driving less tiring when going from one end of the country to the other. I use CC often, but not in all circumstances (heavier motorway traffic is a no for me as the car isn't smart enough to control the speed naturally).

Lane assist. This one I can't stick up for really... I only use it if I'm opening a bottle of water or something and just want the car to keep me in lane... however in theory it could reduce accidents when people swerve between lanes on motorways.

High Beam assist. Again useful, its just convenience really. Don't see the problem as long as they work, mine always turns off quickly, doesn't always turn on when I want it to though.

Blind spot assist. I haven't driven a car with this, but I don't see what harm it can do having it... again, accident mitigation. It's not like people are going to start changing lanes without looking.....

Parking system plus. Generally do find these kind of gimmicky. But like some of the new BMWs have a thing where it will drive the last (100m?) in reverse for you, could be useful if somewhere pitch black with fences etc on either side... just useful and does no harm.

So i don't really think any of these things are going to make driving standards poorer, they are designed to assist drivers and make things safer. Admittedly though, something like pre-sense can do some stupid stuff from time to time, but again the idea of it is good and I know it has prevented some crashes.

I *think* what is also part of this system is the rear crossing detection, which I've heard to be useful as there are some areas where reversing on to a road can't be avoided and you can't fully see until backed out a far way! I can see your points on the other items, personally I'd never pay for things like adaptive cruise control and lane assist, whole lot of money for something I can do myself.

Lack of advanced key and folding mirrors (Hands were tied when buying from stock as there was nothing left, think I got one of the last decent specs left). And also the fact my trim is plastered with ‘S’ and not ‘S3’ like the PFL.

Totally agree about the S3 on the trims etc - Cheapening the model in my opinion especially as they put the price up as well

You'd think. But if people rely on these systems to bing or bong. then they won't bother looking as the car says there's nothing there.

Can I also add parking sensors to this? Not even rear parking sensors!

The only other gripe, and I don’t know if this is just mine, the center console just above the gear stick feels quite lousy built. Just touching the side with your leg makes it creak? Would like to know if anyone else has this actually!

Apart from that I love it!

I can see where you’re coming from. You can never rely on the system to heavily as they all have their limitations. Just as an example, if you have lane assist on and you drive past an exit, it will think that you need to be in that lane and will attempt to steer off the motorway and on to the exit as it can’t distinguish between the correct lines. It’s a hands on all the time system which some people don’t seem to understand unfortunately.

Adaptive cruise control is quite useful for myself as I’m on the motorway everyday. Again it does have its limitations, if a car is pulling in to your lane attempting to overtake someone, the car with acc will keep going at normal speed until the other car comes in to line with the radar which is in the middle of the car bumper and then realise that it’s too close to the overtaking car and then break. Otherwise, having used it for over a year, I would say that it’s a really good system. I would spec that again if I was to buy a brand new car.

Blindspot assist can be a gimmick but I think the intention with that is just a precautionary method.

The high beam assist, I never really use this to be honest. It’s off pretty much all the time.

When I said parking system plus, I meant that I had the front and rear sensors and that’s it lol.

I’m lucky that I found a car with this spec really as some of the options on there, I probably wouldn’t have chosen myself. They are apparently safety systems at the end of the day and I imagine that vwag would have tested these systems extensively to ensure their reliability. I don’t think that anyone from VWAG would want another lawsuit on their hands after dieselgate.

Yea, I think this was mentioned on the previous page. A small amount of the early FL’s didn’t have them as standard, which would make sense. Still though

Only thing I wish mine had as well was a flamethrower at the back for morons who think it’s a good idea to tailgate in town or on motorway. Seriously, the amount of nonces that I see tailgating is amazing and angering at the same time.

It’s like flies to a flame. Since getting a s3 I’ve never been cut off and tailgated so much in my years of driving. Whether it’s town or motorways. Gonna invest in dash cams soon.

Only consolation is that, if I put my right foot down, I know I can leave them for dead. I had a yob in a ford transit trying to race me the other day.

Silly software glitches like the * button forgetting it’s function annoy me and the lack of feel through the steering wheel, I knew that before buying though.

Overall it’s a great package really, wouldn’t take much to make it even better but then it would step on the RS3’s toes, ex noise of course.

Similar to my bugs bears.
Steering Wheel * button forgetting.
Music not picking up where I left off (using the iPod via USB socket)
Left hand side of dash (Virtual Cockpit) changing if someone phones me and after I hang up

i think the options of all the assistants are also to recoup money for the developement costs to items that will be needed for the autonomous cars that manufacturers are working towards.

Lane assist - I never used
Adaptive cruise I loved at first but I would only have in the future if there was an option to flick between adaptive and standard as there are some occasions it is useful (road works on motorways) and other times it drove me nuts. Too many times it slammed the car to a halt when someone was turning off an a road. The subtle way it drops speed and before you know it you’re stuck behind a crawler going too slow to pull out. Alarming warnings when it thinks you’re breaking too late. Makes you have to pull out to overtake too early or it slows you. Even with distance set to shortest.
-blind spot- useful
-hba awful but my last car had matrix lights and they were unbelievable. Just left them to do their business.
-parking sensors with visual aid I find the best compromise. Really don’t like cameras, often have them on hire cars when I’m away just don’t like them

Curious why you don't like a reversing camera?
There simply is no substitute for this technology when wanting to reverse as close as possible to an object.
I wish I had one on this car. :(

Just not comfortable monouvering a car and not looking out of windows and mirrors. I like to look In the traditional way, listen for beeps as my warning and just glance at what part of the car has detected an object

I hear what you're saying. :)
Where some people go wrong though is to use the camera as a substitute for established methods, when it should be used to compliment them by providing additional information when required.

I think it depends on where you live, type of neighbourhood you're passing through, time of day etc., as I find the other drivers (95-97% of the time) are scared of the road presence of my S3, maybe helped by a Res Delete. Not many will tailgate me and if they do try it on, they tend to back off knowing they don't have a chance. That said, I don't drive like a typical CHAV!

I think gender plays a part too, my wife drives an A3 Sportback TDI and she gets all types of knob heads on her trail!

I like the folding mirrors.. however I dislike how the passenger seems to randomly stick when car has started.. I may need take it back under warranty!

I dislike the lack of shopping handle/ bag hook in the boot. probably typical female comment but I used them all the time with my food shopping on my 11 plate Audi and the facelift model doesn't come with them.

There’s shopping hooks on the side of the boot on mine. Well at least I think that’s what they are for.

I agree with you there, only one clip in boot ( S3 saloon) :
my wife quickly told me exactly where she needed said items fitted!
It quickly gaineds two folding down Audi double hooks AND a semi open clip for the umbrella :thumbs up:

I'll see if I can find the Audi part number for them.

Focus or Fiesta.

Were they better to drive than the Audi?

that's the one. I had that and used it regular in the older a3. the facelift I have now seems to not have it on the hatch anyway.
