Changed the oil yesterday and I took pictures as I went along, so thought I’d do a ‘how to’ or ‘how not to’ depending on how you look at it
Make sure the oil is warm.
Then jack up the car and secure with axle stands or whatever makes you happy working underneath it.
These are the jacking points.
Once you are happy then remove the Torx screws from the engine undertray
There are 3 on each side and one up front
Next undo the 3 Torx bolts that go into the subframe.
The shield then will hang down and you can pull it backwards while pressing
on the 2 tabs where it interlocks with the front trim.
Once off lay it to one side, you’ll probably notice stones / road grit on the under-tray so tip/ brush them off.
Next locate the sump plug and undo it, having an oil pan ready underneath for the oil to flow into.
The FL sump plug is a Torx fitting.
Allow the oil to drain out fully, as it’s lockdown you can go have a cup of tea etc while it does.
Oh and slacken the oil filling cap on the engine.
Once you are happy it’s drained out clean up around the plug opening, then insert your new plug / washer, note that when ordering the sump plug that the washer is a separate item, not like the PFL where the washer comes pressed on the plug.
Tighten up to 25nm.
Next up locate the oil filter housing, it’s at the front of the engine and unscrew the plastic cover off the bottom to expose the orange drain nipple.
For the next step you’ll need the Vag drain tool to empty the contents of the filter housing.
Screw it into the opening and you’ll see the oil start to empty into the tube.
I always take the tube cap off first so the oil can flow straight out.
Again let all the oil drain out and once you are happy unscrew the drain tool.
Next up you’ll need a filter socket of the 76mm and 14 flange variety.
Undo the plastic housing to expose the filter.
Once undone remove the old filter and give the inside a quick clean up.
Remove the old rubber seal by pulling up at the tab with long nose pliers or similar
Get your new seal and smear it all in some new oil, then insert into the groove inside the filter housing, make sure the tab is facing up towards you.
One important one here.
Turn your attention back to the orange nipple on the bottom of the filter housing, use some long nose pliers to gently pull it back out so that it’s level with the surrounding plastic
If you don’t do this, you will have oil weep out when you start driving.
Once done insert the new filter in and screw the housing back up.
Torque to 25nm and screw the drain cover back on.
Double check you are happy.
Re-fit the under-tray.
Lower the car and fill with oil, I filled with 6.5litres initially then started the car up to allow circulation / fill up the filter etc then switch off.
After 10 mins check the level and add oil as necessary to bring up to the correct level.
Parts used 1 x sump plug / washer N0138495, N91167901
New OEM filter 06D115562
2 x 5 litres of Castrol edge Pro 5w-30 oil
One extra point
When the filter housing is off, there can be some oil that drips onto the sump edge, it then can track its way across the sump edge and drip off the other side which can make it look like a leak when it isn’t.
Just wipe down the area to get this excess oil.
