i have a decat and a panel filter and it made it wastgate abit more, but i want it alot louder i blocked off the recirculating dump valve to see if that would make any diffrence but it made it alot quieter!
any suggestions?

simple as that. he blocked it off, so he is running with No DV at all.

Bad idea.

The sound you were hearing isn't wastegate chatter anyway mate, you dont get that on the 1.8T, its compressor stall. which is bad.

Bigger things like the T38 on an escort cosworth may be able to take it, but the tiny gay turbos fitted to any 1.8T will not withstand it at all.

If you want the noise louder, you need a CAI not a panel filter.

The Nissan 200SX boys do that, its called "The pidgeon mod" I would never do it to any car, stalling the turbo and making it spin the opposit way and then back again when the foot goes down. Most argue it does no damage, I wouldnt want to take the risk though!

try a remap followed by a BMC panel filter or equal & an uprated DV such as bailey, Forge, hyperboost.

This will give you somemore noise alternatively you can get spltter valves that allow an atmospheric dump while still maintaining a recirculation.

Ah sorry I had to check I wasnt sure why anyone would try doing that. I thought the 1.8T was a semi-recirc? If thats the case you also risk damaging the engine, remove that mod.

the 1.8T fully recircs everything, there is no atmospheric vent at all.

You can fit an atmosph on older engines, but as its MAF based it will still over fuel on gearchanges, which in time, will damage the cat.

All in all not a great idea.

Also, the sound gets old. I had it for 18 months, and as I tunned the car more, the dump noise got louder and louder.

I loved it for a time, but recently swapped back to a modified smoothed airbox with a panel filter.
I now much prefer it quieter. I still hear the DV every once in a while, but nothing like it was.

It used to scare children from 200 yards!

When i see the young chavs tearing up and down high streets pssssshing at every gear change thinking they look cool all i think is total c*ck
Just my opinion though.

cheers i dont want a pssssssssssssssssshing i want wastegate chatter!

Wastegate chatter on a vag 20vt is bad, you really dont want it

After all, their not performance turbos, just quick family hatchbacks

To quote.....

There is a common myth in the automotive world about so called "wastegate chatter" or "turbo flutter", a noise created on lifting off the throttle in a turbocharged car. The sound is commonly described as a chipmunk or a rattlesnake and is often stated incorrectly as being a result of the turbo's wastegate closing.
The noise is in fact the air compressed by the turbo passing back through the compressor wheel of the turbo after the airflow is abruptly halted by the throttle body closing.

In other words not the best way to look after your turbo charger.

It would be more simple if it was a twin turbo, but seriously if you want that hassle then, You have bought the wrong car seeing as its not a cheap fix if this all go wrong on you, a mate had this noise on a 5 gt turbo and blew 3 turbos and finally realised that the money was not worth the silly 'look at me i got a turbo' noise. Honestly if you want this noise get a Punto GT not as weak (nevertheless still weak) as the 5 but basically the same thing.

I've just had my car remapped and had the Forge 007p diverter valve fitted. I now get turbo or wastegate chatter/whoosh when coming off boost... I was told there was meant to be some more noise with this set up - but is this right? Worried now!

I too have just had a custon code remap and a 007 forge diverter valve and i get a lot of "chatter" as i come off light boost and and a loud dump valve tsssshhhh after coming off higher boost.

That is not chatter that is escaping air, chatter is a very distinct fluttering noise, sounds like a pidgeon!

Firstly there is no such thing as wastegate chatter it is in fact compressor stall. What happens is the compressed air in the inlet has nowhere tro go once the throttle butterfly is closed and get's pushed back through the turbo. The sound is in effect the compressed air being chopped by the turbo's blades. Despite many myths that are bandied about this is very unlikely to cause damage to the unit although this does vary depending on the turbo being used. What can cause damage on these cars however is the MAF can't distinguish which direction the air is passing over it so overfueling often occurs.

My FRST runs no dumpvalve and chatters like mad. pop on YouTube and eneter "Fiesta RS Turbo Chatter" (can't post link as the site is blocked from the office).

I've just bought a Forge Split R so your welcome to buy my old one off me ;)

It may be unlikely to cause damage but forcing air through something spinning at possibly 80,000rpms in the opposite direction to its rotation doesnt sound like a good idea.

I'm yet to see a failure as a result of not runnig one

Ive yet to see a side effect from my constant wanking, just cause their isnt one yet doesnt mean there wont be (or someone else has had one that they were to embarrased to admit to!)

With my job basis and knowledge of turbines (more from a fluid and aerospace viewpoint granted) Id not be wanting to the sort of effects non-dv'd 20vt go thru for any period of time.

Well your wrist will be the first point of problems......

Like I said mate it's not just me it's also friends in Ford tuning circles and a couple of people through those circles who's job it is to repair/rebuild automotive turbochargers.

I'm not going to pass a general comment on all turbos and certainly not on the K03/03s/4 as my experience at present is limited but certainly on the Garret range of turbos found in RS Turbos and Cosworths there is no ill effect to not running one. There are some arguements that their fitment can cause turbo overspeeding so I spose with what you give with one hand you take away with the other

Getting a s3 to sound like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IguEOuPvKDs

i think is a bit impossible i wanted this sound but stuck to a forge not loud at all but better than a dead turbo

Correct me if im wrong

I use both hands mate, its called a double-handed power ****. Its even better when your at work and your coverd in hydraulic fluid with an unlocked toilet door... then its a Double-Handed Power Paid Danger **** ;)

Ive known Golfs go thru turbos (Mk2 e38 20vt **** sucking tosspiece ******* tho so it doesnt matter) thru running no dv. The KOs are **** tbh tho

I found that on my old gti 1.8 turbo fitting a carbonio cai from awesome gave that sort of wastegate chatter sound, (darth vader with a cold sound). I was considering getting one for my S3, if they do one prior to having it remapped. (I'd keep the standard dump valve tho)

Check the carbonio out / ask awesome they may be able to help :icon_thumright:

Dunno about everyone else but that twittering fiesta in the vid sounds ******* annoying! Why would you want a car to sound like that.....? Would drive me mental.
OK for proving to the schoolgirls you have a turbo, but cannot see any other point to it whatsoever. Sorry

NoggyDS3..

I had the custom code remap last week and had exactly the same noise, i went back to JBS today and they found that the Forge diverter was broken(stuck closed i think) and they said it was definatley bad for the turbo when you here the fluttering noise.
After a new valve the noise has gone and the car is running better too!
Get the garage that did it to check the valve as there could have been a faulty batch sent out from the factory.

I've just bought a Forge Split R so your welcome to buy my old one off me ;)

I went to fit my new Forge Split R today expecting to find a dump valve of some sort already there but it was just the standard S3 one !

The engine is a standard 210 model with a K&N induction kit which seems to cause most of the noise tbh.

Got my new forge fitted and seems to drive a little nicer, not quite as choppy in 1st and 2nd anyway (may just be my imagination though!).

It still seems to have a little flutter though when I come off the throttle, i'll get a sound clip and post it up.

What % of outlet are you running on the ShitR sorry Splitr?

Really cant see how running an open vent system on a closed recirc system thats based on the main power credentials of the 20vt helps

Thanks -its not a major loud noise but there is definately a dump/flutter of air when coming off boost. i had the mobile CC guy so garage is a problem! will give them a phone and see what they say. now that yours is fixed - is there any noise at all? just so i know what to look for whne replacing the forge. i've still got the standard one so i could put that back on but it would be nice to compare it to another 007p.

Decided to just take the forge off and refit the standard bosch dv. When i took the forge off i tested it with a pen and the piston would not budge so it looks like another faulty 007p - will be phoning JBS tommorrow to see if they can send me up a replacement and i can just fit it myself. Either that or i'll just get a refund and keep a spare standard dv handy in case it goes as its only a 5min job.

The noise when coming off boost has now gone and the car is a lot smoother on gear changes so all seems good again!

Thanks.

Interesting thread, my A3 1.8T 1999 model does this as well. I always thought it was just the way the turbo works? as its my first Turbo car.

Mine is a similar noise to the youtube clip, but its a higher pitch and alot more quieter. I get it when accelerating and then pulling straight off the throttle to change gear, as soon as you cut the throttle the psssh sound can be heard, but its not very loud.

From reading the above (if ive gotten it right) I shouldnt be hearing this at all?? and the problem is a faulty dv ?

If so would a standard replacement be the best option? or take the opportunity to upgrade? whats the rough costs of this, and is it a simple thing to swap out?

Cheers

The standard one went on my old 1998 1.8T, i replaced it again with standard and it was totally fine. bout £25 i think. It was still fine when i sold the car.

Most people say that the forge 007p is one of the best upgraded dv's as it operates the same as the standard, its just more robust. Thats why i went for it - esp with the remap.

As above, mine was faulty, but i wont let that bother me, plenty people run them without problems and thats why JBS have another one in the post on its way up to me! Costs about £85.

Or - there are other options...as people have stated on this. Also plenty links if you do a search.

Hi Guys, Sorry to jump in.....

Just wondering if the noise on my A3 1.8t is normal? I've just changed the temp sender and the car is runnin better now. Howeverr i have noticed that it makes a dump noise, or quiet flutter when coming off throttle or changing gear. Its not mega loud, and you cant hear it with the radio on. Is this normal or should it be silent? how can I check if its got an aftermarket valve on?

Cheers all.

ive been told standard dump valves are the best! theres a rs6 running 500+ bhp on them wiv no problems!

yea i think the standard ones are good and i've certainly only had one go on my last 2 audis in over 3 yrs. i think some people find that the diagphragm can split, esp when running higher boost. the forge is metal and uses a piston so no chance of the diaphragn slitting..?!

As far as i understood there shouldn't be any 'flutter' when you come off the boost - not in my old 1.8T or my S3. it could be that your diaphragm is split (thats what happened to me on the 1.8T and i had same symptoms as you) or the diverter valve not recirculating. More likely to be split though.

You can see the dv just under the engine cover at the top right (looking down on it) to see if its standard or aftermarket.

I've Bought a S3 last week with a Baily atmospheric dv on, is this good or should i be changing it back to a recirculating one? I'm getting a bit confused here on whether i should keep it or not. The previous owner had it on for 2.5 yrs with no problems.

my forge 007 was actually quite loud before i took it off, seems it was leaking or not opening enough very strange.
