I have a Audi S3 2017, I'm sure when I got it nearly two years ago the ESP light never really came on when I accelerated hard (Pedal all the way down), maybe sometimes in really heavy rain but very occasionally. Recently I've noticed if I put the accelerator to the floor going under 50mph the ESP light (car with squiggly lines) always flashes for one / two seconds (in wet or dry conditions), it still accelerates quickly but not like it used to when the light didn't flash as I'm assuming it's holding back. If I hold down the ESP button for 3 seconds and deactivate it, the light doesn't come on but I don't really want to drive around with it off. Does anyone else have this? Have I just always had this but not noticed it? Could something be faulty / need re-calibrating?

Is the Haldex ready for a service?

So this has started happening since the haldex was serviced?

Yes I think it might, I can't pin point exactly when it started doing it but I really noticed it on Thursday this week after the service.

Well are you sure they did it correctly & as per specs.

It's too coincidental after that things changed.

Thanks for the replies. I'm assuming they did it to spec yes, they are a VAG specialist with excellent reviews who have worked on my car before. I don't think the issue is with the Haldex system as the 4wd system I believe is working (how do I confirm this?), they did a check for errors codes and didn't find any however it still has the issue. If I put my foot to the floor the ESP light flashes, power / boost is reduced and then the light stops flashing after a second and it accelerates as normal, it does this even when doing 50/60 mph. How do I know if this is the Haldex system? What else could it be? Without an error code how is it diagnosed?

One strange thing I did notice is that after they plugged in the diagnostic machine to look for error codes, it seemed to return back to normal for 1/2 hard accelerations before the light started flashing again. Doesn't make any sense I know but it definitely temporarily went back to normal twice.

Are you running decent, matching tyres?

Yes, Pirelli P Zero on the front that are 2 months old and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S on the back that are a year old with plenty of tread left, the car just passed it's MOT too so they must be within the limits.

You should really should have matching tyres with Haldex mate, P-Zeros are less grippy than PS4s especially in this lovely British weather. Seems a bit strange if you’ve had mixed tyres for a while and it’s only just started happening though?

You can confirm whether or not the haldex is working by putting the car up on the ramp, wheels off the ground and suspension fully extended and drive it - all 4 wheels should rotate - this is something i need to do soon as its doing my head in thinking the haldex has shiiit the bed

Latest update, the garage checked the work done during the service and confirmed it's all OK and the 4wd system is working, they can replicate the issue however there are still no fault codes. They have now linked this to an Audi TPI and advised it might have been the Haldex system or something else that was serviced wasn't working 100% and since the service it is now working 100% and the issue came to light e.g the haldex filter might have been clogged and has since been cleaned. The TPI does accurately explain what is happening and that this is by design and not a fault.

Service info: traction interruption with sporty noise from exhaust system at full load acceleration - OGC gearbox

Release date: 19-May-2020

Customer statement/workshop findings

Customer complaint:

Brief, sporadic traction interruption at full load acceleration/kick down and constant speed. When changing down a droning can be heard from the exhaust system.

Workshop findings:

When changing down several gears (e.g. 7 > 4) at full load acceleration/kick down and constant journey a traction interruption for a few milliseconds is noticeable. At the same time there is a noise from the exhaust system similar to the acceleration rattle on S models.

There are no event entries or running problems.

All comparison vehicles are similar.

Technical background

In case of a full load acceleration with 100% accelerator pedal in gear S or with a kickdown acceleration in gear D a multiple shiftback (e.g. 7-->4) is particularly sporty. The gear change takes place with open clutches without the selection of an intermediate gear. The engine speed is adjusted to the specified value of the target gear and kept till the gear change has been completed. As a result, a multiple shiftback can be performed up to one second faster. The customer may perceive this as a brief traction interruption.

Production change

Measure

Do not repair. The described driving characteristics are normal and no fault in the sense of warranty.
