The OP says there's no power to the "immobiliser" and the DIS doesn't work. That could be down to a failed cluster and perhaps a new/replacement one is required.
You'd need the SKC for both the car and the new cluster to code a new/replacement one in. Audi can do it but they don't see the SKC...
If you do buy a key from ebay you'll need it coding to your immobiliser otherwise it will not start the car. A dealer or good auto locksmith should be able to do it for you.
If you changed the ECU it would definitely not start!
Have you got another key to try? It could be the reader coil/wiring to it, the instrument cluster or the ECU if a second key doesn't help.
It does vary (which makes my life hard when doing dash swaps for people) but you will MOST LIKELY be OK so long as the rest of the part number matches up.

S3s and TDis are both DBW, but that's not the problem at all. There's no way of coding a petrol cluster into a diesel car and getting the rev counter to work properly. The speedo should work OK though.
