Even though you have selected RGB on your Sky box it may not have switched over you need to check the input on your TV too. Our Sky box seems to switch from RGB to video even though the display indicates RGB, it then has to be forced back to RGB

With regard to a 300 gig hard disk you need a bigger disk to record hd programmes anyway. What is really important is how many hours of tv you can record.
You have dvd+/-r which are write once disks which are cheaper, dvd+/-rw disks which are re-useable and cost more, then you have dvd ram which are re-useable and are encapsulated like minidisk.
Different manufacturers support different formats so if you want to make recordings to play back on...
