Hi, although this is my first post on the forum, ive already been using for forum for months and have had so much useful information which is what leads me to this question. From your personal experience how much is a coolant temperature sensor from audi and a thermostat? I called up audi today and they wanted 34 pound for the sensor, does this sound correct?

Also ive found a guide for changing the temperature sensor on the FAQ section but i was wondering if theres a guide for the thermostat? My cars going in for a cambelt and waterpump change tomorrow and was wondering if I should save my money and do the thermostat my self or be lazy and get the garage to do it ;) thanks for your help, Dean

get them to do the stat while its all in bits,

the temp sensor is an easy fit, source it from a cheaper dealer seat/skoda etc, also get a new clip for it as they are rubbish!

The thermostat replacement is very, very easy. It's only worth getting a garage to do it if you have severed off both your hands in a manner that makes it impossible to hold a ratchet.

These should keep you right:

thanks for the replys, the garage said they would do it for just the cost of the thermostat while there doing the cambelt and water pump which has added a extra 28 pound to the bill but its worth it in the long run :) thanks for the guide though as my friend has the same car and issues as I so this will come in handy while doing his car

Seems sensible. Although I paid about £6 for my thermostat, it might not have been OEM but the Audi ones don't appear to be holding out too well ;)

Make sure you use a genuine coolant temp sensor. Aftermarket ones are notorious for not working properly. CTS from TPS ( Trade Part Specialists) is about £25.

The work has been done and within 2 minutes was up to 90 :) also runs quieter while driving, thanks for all the replies again and ill remember everything thats been said as it probs wont be long before my temp sensor fails. ;)

Two mins to get to 90?

Mine takes a good 5-10 mins and that's with a new genuine stat and temp sensor!

Hi Guys, I was wondering if someone could help me out here. I've just bought a 2008 1.9 TDi A4 Avant s-line. I have noticed that there is a very small leak around the thermostat housing area.

It's this pipe (second picture arrowed) I think which goes into where the thermostat goes and looks like it goes into the heating matrix for the inside of the car. I can feel it's a little damp under the pipe and there is a small ledge for it to drip onto so there is a small amount on there.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me to fix/how much it would cost from a dealer to fix?

I don't think it's very serious at the moment because when I unscrew the expansion tank it has got lots of pressure.

Many thanks
Tom
