Hi Guys,

Was just wondering if anyone could give me some idea on costs to supply and fit a clutch in an 02 S3 (BAM engine code)AMD mapped.Only looking for a rough idea as i think i may be needing one soon!

Also advice on different clutch kit options would be great.

Cheers
Andy

Up to around £600 for a std unit fitted, then depending on how bad your DMFW is, that may add an extra few quid too.

It's the labour that causes the high prices, it's roughly a days work to remove and refit so min 8 hrs x £n.nn plus parts

Audi do this as a fixed price job for £799, price inclusive of VAT, labour and parts. I would imagine you would be extra to replace the concentric slave cylinder but these are only about £30 iirc. This also wouldn't take account of any damage to the flywheel that may or may not be evident until the box is off.

Now.... Tally-Ho to the AA brigade...... (That's Anti-Audi by the way)

Shop around, look for a gearbox specialist, labour should be around £250, I'm sure you can source a new clutch yourself, under £200, DMF are around £300 if you need one.

In terms of the fitting - there seems to be differing evidence - I know JBS took less than 4 hours to fit mine, but other garages say it is at least an 8 hour job.

You say your car is mapped - so you may want to consider an upgraded clutch. SOmething like a Sachs Organics (like I have) are around £500 or so; standard Sachs replacement is around £200 as Joe says. Depending upon how frisky your remap is and how long you are keeping the car for can shape which one you go for.

Thanks for all the helpful advice guys.Much appreciated:yes:

Jason...Thats interesting doing the job in half the time that other places estimate????
Could you tell me what JBS charge for an hourly rate fella?PM me if you prefer.JBS are not too far from me so i'll give them a call i think and maybe source my own clutch kit.

Any more advice on the clutch to go for???Keeping in mind that the car has been mapped, only stage one AMD so nothing too aggressive. But i'd like it to last more than a couple of years as i plan on keeping the car.

Cheers

Really depends on your driving style, I have AmD stage1 also.... standard clutch is upto the job, but then I rarely launch the car.

Mine was fitted 3 years ago now so the labour rates will have changed quite a bit. In terms of the difference in time it was explained that if you know what you are doing you can avoid taking some of the bits off which reduces the time taken to fit it. The counter point was that if you don't take all the bits off you can't see if you've got it aligned properly. Ultimately I had one garage (JBS) saying one thing and another garage (The Phirm) saying another.

Gearbox specialist just gave me a fixed price, they never quoted me a time, it was £250, but I paid £225, as I got 10% off for being trade. They had my car for 6hrs and it was done.

Trade?
You own/work in a take away dont you jojo??

well technically it is an 8 hour job. But if you got 2 or 3 people on it, the job is somewhat reduced.

I got quoted about 900 from my local dealer when I was looking at buying an s3 with a naffed clutch.

if its still relevant?

I just paid £700 at a dealer for clutch, gearbox oil change and drive shaft boot all in. They told me as the sub frame had been out the price included time to re-align all wheels, they did do this wether it really needed doing or not. I didnt think this was bad all in at a dealer tbh.

So i know i have a new clutch, fresh box and all wheels should be pointing in the right direction for a weeks wages or so, not too bad really especially as its the only major spend (ignoring cam belt) in 125K miles.
