I have recently been hearing a funny noise coming from the airbox/intake area? It sounds like a chatter or suction noise. It only does it when coming off the throttle. Car seems to be running ok but maybe using more fuel than usual? Any ideas?

Cheers

your diverter valve is broken or the little vac pipe on it has split

sorry to ask a stupid question but could you try and tell me exactly where the diverter valve and the little vac pipe is? i assume that it is attached to the air intake pipe?

cheers

My car does exactly the same! The previous owner had my car remapped so I always assumed it was due to that, and I've had loads of work done on the car by audi/vw specialists who have taken the car for a test drive after they had carried out any work on it and they have never said anything about it, so I assumed everything was as it should be. But now it's got me wondering too as soon as the diverter valve and pipe have been mentioned. My car wistles and sucks a lot under acceleration too.

It just doesn't sound right to me, unless anyone else knows different? The car seems to be using slighty more fuel aswell.

Haha! Yeah it does! I like it, and always get comments about it from mates and passengers, my step daughter calls it the jet car. :)

on the 1.8T the diverter valve is at the bottom of the engine behind the offside foglight, should have 3 hoses coming out of it, not too sure about the 2.5 though, if its goosed or a hose has split, you should be able to see it from there.

my standard 130 also does it......... just a noise of the turbo coming off full spool id say......

i have this sound too did not have it when i first got the car over two years back any one have a pic of a diverter valve and where it would be on tdi 1.9 so i can have a look ;-)

I was really worried about it to start with but Audi assured me I shouldn't worry about it, thay said some do it and some don't, they wouldn't turn away custom surely if somthing was wrong, so since then I don't take any notice of the noise, I was just curious to see how many other folk had the same.

The tdi does not have a diverter valve.

My tdi 130 does it as well, i've asked before and it seems many other people have it.

I suffer this too on my 2.5tdi 180 but I also get a louder air rush noise and a noisy turbo under load when it is playing up! I have been told by a Turbo specialst and that it could be a cat issue creating more back pressure and causinbg the egr valve to remain open and cause the chatter when I ease off the throttle!

Mine has done this since I had a major service. Not been too worried about it, but if it's something to fix I will.

this just started happening on mine last night when i reversed it into my parking space. Does anyone know if the actuator can be swapped without changing the turbo?
