The turbo on my 2.0tdi has the famous whistling sound on spool up! Going to change it's oil and filter to see if it's that, but I'm fearing the worst tbh! I'd rather bite the bullet now, had thought about finding some lucky lady to be my girlfriend before Xmas, but I'll wait now or at least until I know whether I need a new turbo! Please don't think I'm being a tight ****, but my a3 comes 1st! Well certainly before I splash out on modern warfare 3, the book how to keep your man interested, a hedge trimmer as every woman should keep her bush trim n edged.. As Xmas presents for her!

Best options, recon or new oem unit, best place to buy one from ect and best prices please

Please help as there's only 5 weeks til Christmas

Recon turbo fitted including oil pipe, oil etc. £695 at Volksworks in Leeds.

Had mine done in March - think I probably mentioned them when we met ?

BTW have you been drinking again ? LOL

This whistling on spool up is it premature turbo failure or not?mine is doing it also, how come so many of these cars seem to suffer with turbo problems???

my one has started to make a police siren type noise on spool up! from what I've read some say it's on its way out some others state they have done 60k plus with the turbo making this noise??? my fingers are crossed

On the way out guys I'm afraid and Nomis, there are millions of BKD engined cars out there without problems. Check the thread asking for whose turbo has gone and there doesn't seem to be that big a percentage !!!!!

You only hear about bad things happening on the forum because people need help. Nobody posts a thread saying ' is anybody's A3 problem free'. We are on the forum basically to discuss problems and ideas, the other ten million are either not interested in ideas, or have no problems, and they do not join forums !

Mike,
I agree with what you're saying,£695 for a turbo fitted does'nt seem a bad price i think, hows the car running now with the recon turbo?do you think i could get the turbo done under warranty i have a month left.

Evening Mike, nope I wasnt drinking, I was merely trying to add some humour to the site.. I've shopped around and found new prices ranging from 800 for oe garrett and up to 1200 for a hybrid, I'm going to phone a couple of reconditioners tomorrow, if antone can recomend such place/company in West Yorkshire, i'll remove my turbo and offer them it to recon for me?????

The car is running perfectly and the new (recon) turbo is guaranteed for two years.

You could certainly try and get it replaced under warranty and certainly bring it to the attention of the place you bought it from. If they refused to replace it and something went wrong then they could face an even bigger bill !

I have a Warranty Direct after market warranty and when I rang them to say the symptoms looked like the turbo was about to go (I took the car to an independent specialist first for verification) they agreed to pay for the recon. turbo rather than footing the bill for a blown engine !

Evening Markie - I believe there is a place in Batley that recons turbos. I can't remember the name but I've seen vans running around here. You could always Google it .

Was only joking about the drinking mate - good luck with the search.

cheers Mike, I hope your well fella?

I;ve found a couple of places on the net, located in Wakefield. I have a very good mate, who was trained by Harrogate Audi then he was the master tech at york Audi, who now works for himself so i'll get him to fit it for me

Hi Markie,

can your mate not get you one on the cheap?

Cheers for your messages etc

Well today I phoned a couple of places in west yorkshire, very helpful, and seem to offer a good service! Between £200 if minimum wear to my turbo, and £375 if it totally wrecked, but i'm hoping it minimum as my mate says it sounds like the bearings are just starting to wear. (fingers crossed) But having said that, i'm pondering going for thr full rebuild option regardless. They also tell me its a 24hr turn around if I drop it off and collect. And I asked if the use the 360* bearings, which they say they do! So from how much Audi would charge, i'm hoping i'll have enough for the uprated Forge boost pipes left over...

Once again, thanks for your messages etc

I'm not sure regarding the reliability of a hybrid, i'd hope they were for the cost of them, I'd also thought about going hybrid, but considering my clutch would prob need uprating, i'd change the oil more often at more cost, it made me think standard suits my pocket better at the moment..

Just out of interest, does anyone have the prices for the turbos oil feed, and drain pipes??

Markie,
I've seen somewhere oil feed pipe about £40 from dealers, not sure about drain pipes.

The whistleing noise on spool up you're hearing could it be a leaking boost pipe???

I'm not sure, I've spoken with my mate and he is going to do actuator tests, remove the pipes and check for leaks, hopefully tomorrow evening, As im stationary, eg yesterday I used a side of road car washing co. the engine was ticking over but the high pitched noise seemed to increase, but when i blipped the excelerator the noise seemed to drop in volume??

The whistleing noise on mine starts at about 1500 rpm all the way till i change gear, then i get this dump valve sounding noise so i'm not to sure if its turbo or leaking boost pipes???

I had the dreaded police siren noise, started quietly as if a police car was following you then about four months on it sounded like the siren was on top of the car. Eventually started over boosting then limp mode. Cost me £700 to recondition including striping and refitting. Car drives better and even gets a few extra mpg's than before but at low revs when pulling away etc it still makes the police siren noise! What could this be?

A small amount of whistle is normal at low revs - mine does it after refurb,

Presumably you had the oil feed pipe replaced as well as that is usually a requirement of the guarantee provided by the refurb company ?

Markie - £40 was the cost of the pipe when mine was done.

The oil feed pipe wasn't replaced as they said they had done a pressure test on the original and that it was fine! Is this a no no?

I can only tell you that the guy that fitted mine said that the refurb company would only guarantee the turbo if a new oil pipe was fitted.

I can't say it's a no no but I think it must be accepted good practice to do it !

I've got the police siren :( I wish I'd never bought my a3 now, I've basically rebuilt it

I'm well cheesed off with Audi, I thought buying a TDI with 30k on the clock and full ASH was a safe option! Think a visit to warranty direct is in order, £480 for the year sounds ok

I just wish the turbo was as big an issue as the injectors then we'd get a new turbo for free courtesy of Audi!

Anyone had any first hand experience of an after market warranty like warranty direct? trying to work out what the best policy is

Yes me ! Warranty Direct

2.0l TDI 2006; 75k miles ; annual cost £320. Wear and tear covered but only 80% of parts between 70 and 80k. Full labour covered.

Had new turbo in March which cost me £200 (20%parts contribution plus warranty doesn't cover for any other bits or oil etc.)

Garage diagnosed problem and rang warranty direct who authorised repair. As it was not one of their 'approved' garages I had to pay everything upfront and send in the claim form with receipts etc. and documentary evidence of servicing at correct time .

Received cheque from WD in 5 days - all-in-all well worthwhile !

I agree Mike, seems well worth your investment, sadly I didnt think to take out such policy.

Ok, to add to my dilema. I can have my turbo reworked to hybrid inc 360 degree bearing. My car is mapped to 185bhp and 300ft/lb torque. Do I choose the hybrid option, or can anyone tell me please, is the 170bhp bkd engines turbo any different to my 140bhp? As i'm thinking of just exchanging mine and getting the 170bhp unit, is it an option, or rather a better option if its a stronger turbo??

That's a very good question Mark - I shall be interested in any answers. Funnily enough after all the threads and my reading this forum I have never seen that question asked before.

Surely it's an obvious choice - or is it ???

Yes - why not ? I should leave it 24 hours in case you get an answer and in the meantime maybe do a quick search to make sure it hasn't been asked ( and answered ) before. Like I said, I can't remember seeing it otherwise I'm sure I would have remembered the answer !

Thread like 'will a 170 bkd turbo fit a 140 bkd' or something like that eh ?? Cheers

I think I've seen it before "Devonmikeyboy" answered the question.(may have been a different forum)
The inside of the turbo is the same but the turbo is fitted at a different angle and manifold is different aswell, or something along those lines. The short answer is that it isn't a straight swap and hybrid was the best option for cost and performance.

Found it now:

Does anyone know are the Hybrid turbos more reliable than the OEM or recon turbos?

Depends if the hybrid is a new or recon unit bored out to hybrid spec, but same turbo's overall mate.

I will have a 140 bkd new hybrid turbo for sale shortly.

GoCar Warranty Purchased £333 with wear & tear inc, made sure they told me in writing that they cover all parts of the turbo and DSG box

you can pay interest free monthly which after deposit works out at £29/month

Right...now to start ragging the turbo from cold everyday and see how long it lasts!

Nice one cloughy - the more of us that do that then the more our premiums go up !

Same with false insurance injury claims !
When you grow up you might realise the implications.

If you are joking then I apologise.

I was joking, I'm definitely not going to break my car on purpose

Well I popped the bonnet tonight and decided to have a listen. Near the bulkhead on the n/s behind the relay and bettery cover, I can hear a hissing sound. So at low revs it's the whistle, and whilst holding the revs higher than tickover, it's a hissing and whistle! Does anyone have the etka part page for the turbo Inc pipes and seals.. Please
