faulty ignition barrel ?

my friend has a tdi 1.9 and when he turns his key to start lights all come on dash but when you puts key into last position
theys a slight time delay before the car starts then all is ok.

some times theres a delay some times theys not

any body got any ideas

ignition switch possibly or dodgy starter motor. mine was doing that for a while and it was my ignition switch. just over a tenner from gsf

Yes and don't ignore it as if it is starting to fall apart (feeling loose without a strong return from the crank position) it can engage the starter motor while doing 70+ on the motorway and starter motors really don't like that!

yh just remove steering wheel cover and u can't miss it, no need to remove the steering wheel like i nearly did lol
