Hi,

My car is an 07 TDI 170

When driving there is often a hesitation under acceleration for maybe half a second whilst pulling through the rev range it then usually carries on ok but it sometimes hesitates multiple times through one gear. Once the car is fully warm and had a good blast the problem goes away. The car also feels like it is hunting a tiny bit at traffic lights, nothing to make the rev needle move but a slight blip every now and again (I initially presumed this was a characteristic of the engine)

Also a week or so ago I had 2 fault codes one was 00552 and the other read along the lines of engine speed sensor- implausible speed reading. I cleared them with VAG com and they have never returned.

Anybody have any idea what the issue may be with the engine hesitation?

Thanks

Henry

Bit of an update, I've changed the fuel filer which was pretty much spotless to no avail. The car has been in at audi and they can't find anything as there is no fault codes as I cleared them not so long ago and they couldn't replicate the hesitate. The problem seems to be getting more persistent and the car is struggling to start every now and again. Also the other day it was really struggling to pull through the hesitation and I noticed there was a good amount of smoke coming from the exhaust, the smoke was dark but not pitch black. If anyone one can shed some light on what might be the cause of the problem it is greatly appreciated.
Regards
Henry

I've got a 57 plate 170 tdi. Have experienced hesitation when cruising along at 2000rpm in 3rd were there are dips/surges in power. Also had to call the RAC the other day, as the car started and then shuddered and cut out on the drive. The RAC bloke said there was nothing wrong with the car and advised it was the fuel. Apparently the fuel mixture at certain supermarkets / independent garages etc causes a waxy residue in the top of the fuel filter, and it can't pull it through effectively, causing the issue. Not sure if it's related, but you could try a different petrol station. RAC bloke recommended standard shell diesel. I've not had any further symptoms.

Ok that's deffinately worth a go as we get our fuel delivered and have a tank at home (5 diesel vehicles at home) from an independent supplier so I'll get the tank run down and fill it at the local shell station.

Also does it need to be v power diesel or should the normal be ok?
edit: just seen that you had said standard

Mine sometimes seems like it's hesitating while the DPF is going through a passive regeneration due to the ECU changing the EGR and turbo boost settings. Could it be that?

Yes, if the engine is regenerating you get a slightly mis-fire feeling and the throttle becomes inconsistent, but it will still pull well if you prod the throttle; all the sensation of misfire and uneven running is when on light throttle if it's the regeneration.

No it's almost opposite to that, it's fine when dawdling around but under full throttle it revs off ok and then hits a 'wall', stops increasing the revs then seems to 'clear' itself and carry on fine. It almost never does it after the car is fully warm (I know I shouldn't be booting it whilst its warming up) but it should still rev freely whilst warming up. The other thing is I took it on a 500 mile round trip a few weekends ago and it seemed to be a lot better after that but it is back to its old ways now. I don't to loads of small journeys but most are usually under 45mins.

Did anyone get to the end of this as my car is suffering with the above issue

Have you had the MAF checked?

They don't usually register any faults, the only way to check them is to drive the car and log the requested vs actual values.

All of that has been done - drove around with the MAF sensor off and nothing came up on the dash. I previously had a stage 1 remap on the car but since had to get it removed as it increased the hesitation

Cheers!

You won't get anything show up on the dash with it dsconnected. The car needs to be road tested with the MAF connected and log values either with VCDS or a diagnostics box.

I had the same problem on a mk4 golf as you describe and the maf was the culprit.

So was it a new MAF sensor?

This doesn't sound as bad and I was getting relevant fault codes but I recently did the injector wiring harness on my brothers 140 tdi as it was stuttering and wouldn't pull through to the point it was un drivable. Its been fine ever since.

I have ran the VAGCOM software alongside hoofin the hell out of the car and nothing is being logged as an error. The only issue it was picking up on was from the EGR - this has since been removed and made no difference

Yeah mine was remapped and as in your case it highlighted the problem more.

You're not looking for error codes in vagcom but logging the requested versus actual airflow readings. If the engine is hesitating it sounds as if it's getting less air than it actually needs and therefore holding back.

Update for you, the garage i bought the car from have very kindly taken it back and sent it away to their local audi specialist FOC and after 2 weeks they have found the problem, it was the injector seals so they are being referbed and I should hopefully be getting the car back on weds. Hopefully this might help someone else with similar issues.

Funny you should say that my inlet manifold has gone too and in with Audi Thursday next week
