On full lock its squeaking a lot. Got the mrs to hold it on full lock while i checked and could see that all the bounce is coming from the power steering pulley. So I've took the belt off (which is new along with tensioner) and checked the pulley for any roughness or friction in the bearings but it seems ok.. The only thing i can see is that there is about 3mm of play pulling the pulley away from the PS pump.. Is that enough for my big squeaks??

If there is a 'groaning' noise when you are on full lock its because your power steering fluid level is low... check that first...

already checked, full to the brim, actually a little over full!

Not sure I know what a 'classic A3 belt squeak' sounds like lol but typically noisy serpentine belts are either due to the tensioner being incorrectly fitted after being removed at some point (there is a bracket that can be incorrectly fitted making the tensioner pitch over), tensioner roller bearing on its way out or the PAS pump itself...

Obvs you put more load on the belt if you are on lock as the PAS pump is trying harder and noises (as I mentioned earlier) are normally related to low fluid but if yours is fine then tbh its not something I have heard before..

Got a video maybe?

The alternator pulley is faulty, most common to fail on Tdi models. They're a clutched pulley on some models. Order a pulley from Tps/Audi, you'll need the special tool to remove it though, most specialists will have this.
