2010 Audi S3 Major service.

Hi all.

I hope this hasn't been answered anywhere else. I have checked and have also checked the manual and can't find anything....

My S3 is due a major service (38k miles) in 300 miles! For some reason I thought it was 39k miles so its caught me a bit un-prepared.

Would it matter if I went over this by say... 300 miles? The reason I ask is that I'm working away in the week for another month so it would be a bit of a pain to get it done at the weekend.

Also Audi have quoted me £800 which is ridiculous so the plan is that I'll get the parts from TPS and get my local specialist to do it. (I get a discount from TPS so it'll work out cheaper)
Not done this before.... Can I just go into TPS and give them my reg and ask for everything I'll need for a major or will I need to know exactly what I need.

Does anyone have a list of the exact things I need for this?

Also should I uprate anything as I change it? like the air filter etc? Don't really want to go mad with the coinage though

Hey there.

Well yes Audi are more expensive. That price though for just a major service is crazy. Are they including the Haldex oil and filter change with that perhaps. As that'll be due now at 40k (some do it early every 20k).

independent VAG specialist always going to be cheaper and you'll still get a service stamp. If its out of warranty I'd definitely go independent everytime. Just make sure they use genuine parts and if getting your own I'd imagine you'd need part numbers which I'm sure someone can advise on. Plugs, air filter, pollen filter, oil, oil filter, sump oil drain bolt. Should be about it and obviously do the usual service checks too. Stay away from any performance air filters. Oiled ones can get oil on the MAF sensor and cause problems. Standards fine unless you are going on the performance remap/tuning route.

When getting the Haldex done, make sure they know what they're doing if independent. A lot of garages been know to drain the diff and Haldex and not realise they are two systems that both need refilling! Driving with a dry diff = new diff!

If in the South East I can recommend AMD Essex.

Hey Macros. Thanks for the reply and advice. Standard it is then as I'm going to keep the car standard.
Yeah that's with the haldex and oil. To be honest I don't trust dealers and they're to expensive so with it being out of warranty I'll take it to the specialist who are pretty good and I trust them.
If anyone can help with part/oil numbers/ quantities that would be great.
Probably won't change the oil and filter yet as I had these changed in Feb when I bought the car.
I will be changing the following as per the service schedule though;
Air filter, spark plugs, dust & pollen filter, s tronic oil and filter, haldex oil, brake fluid....

Get the hpfp cam follower checked buddy. Its for preventative maintenace. Its a weak part on the audi and vw engines.

I paid around £750 to Audi for a major service last year + brake fluid, pollen filter, MOT - car was still in warranty so had no choice. However I may stick with audi this year as they keep everything on file and can tell me what parts need doing. To be honest I still get confused with the service book as to what to do when!

Need new brakes and tyres this year and will be going to a local place for those.

thats stupidly expensive my local specialist said he would do a major service cambelt and haldax for £300 all in including genuine parts

mate change ur ribbed belt and tensioner if need be
cam follower
rear diff oil
haldex oil and filter
engine oil gearbox oil
brake fuild
fuel/cabin/air filter (if stock)
PCV
cam belt (but not sure every how many miles you guys change it)

mind you , you can do all that alone... pretty easy [minus the cam belt]

The £750 included Haldex and DSG too. Still a lot but was under warranty.

Yeah looking at getting all that done... It says in the manual to get it done at 38,000 miles. Is it ok to go past that a little?

THe manual is a guide so it should not make too much difference if you go past it a little. However you can imagine the irony if something does go wrong so I suggest getting everything done around 38k miles rather than waiting until you hit 38k.

Major service minus engine oil and filter change (had that done 4k ago) was £507 from a specialist if anyones interested... £184 labour and £239 in parts (£84 vat) A bit better than the £800+ that audi quoted!
