VW MDI with Audi RNS-E?

So im looking at getting AMI for my A3, but was thinking? The VW MDI systems are much cheaper on flee bay, so i was wondering will the MDI work with my RNS-E????

You can try, but from my experience with trying to mix/match, it needs the correct media unit.

Just bumping this up, has anyone ever tried it? It's something I've always been curious about and the MDI units are a lot cheaper!
