The prices of revo and apr remaps make my eyes water.

I had my remap done by a mobile tuner (Eco Vehicle Tuning) at my home with the Celtic Tuning remap for £345 inc vat.

Took the car to an independent 4x4 dyno and the car produced 345hp. Had no issues in 10k miles since the remap and for 50 quid had the remap removed prior to first service and then replaced.

I suppose it's personal preference think I will use Revo or DTUK when my S3 arrives.

I'm heavily leaning towards Revo having gone off Tuning boxes probably due to reading too many internet comments from various 'experts'. The DTUK does seem to offer good gains but the price and installation put me off, £405 discounted for a DIY fit is excessive. I did a lot of research into the TMC box which connects in exactly the same ways, claims the same gains but is £50 cheaper with a 7 day full refund if not happy so if going for a box it would have been the latter, check out Babybmw.net and the M135 owners on there rate the TMC but only because a true remap is not available. Perhaps we should just enjoy our cars how they are and spend the £400 to £500 on fuel ?

^^ This is my dilemma. I have been looking at the 'plug & play' boxes the past few weeks and have evaluated a few of them, would go for the DTUK box if I had to pick one right now, based on what others have said after using it. Cost is an issue though as I do think it is pricey for a box, not leagues more for a full map without an airbox replacement.

My issue is that I know the vehicle is capable of much more and would like to see a bit of this ! :p

As Paul says, I don't think you can go far wrong with either Revo or APR probably the biggest factor being whichever dealer is more convenient for you !

Well it had to be REVO for me, I stumbled upon my local dealer - a highly-regarded AUDI specialist - about 2 minutes round the corner!

After being used to a remapped car, then having the map removed for first service I couldn't wait to get the map back on, the difference really is night and day. Warranty considerations were pushing me towards a tuning box and I did buy one prior to the remap, however never fitted it. Came to the conclusion that I was probably more likely to cause damage to components by fooling the ecu then getting the ecu mapped properly.

Also tuning boxes are not quite as simple as plug and play, most require jacking the car up and removing the under tray to get to certain sensors. The remap can be removed prior to a service, I did this with no issues. I do think APR and Revo are taking the **** a bit with their pricing, if you shop around you can get similar performance gains for half the money. I wouldn't get blinded by the alleged gains by the big hitters, having looked at some of the dyno graphs being banded about I think there is a bit of wizardry going on. Most seem to have a stock car showing at about 20hp above stock before the map is even put on, just some things to bare in mind :)

When speaking to the Revo guys at Edition 38 show he told me about Revo's development process based at different stations worldwide with many hours of testing in different environmental conditions and with varying fuel ratings which was very reassuring!

Have you got the map on now batch ?

Standby on that mate - being attempted as we speak!
Due to the Rugby I don't think I'll actually get to drive the car till next week now!

I've not got my car yet, but this seems like the best option for me, especially if we can get a group discount!

Not sure they do group discounts these days, usually have offers at shows or limited to specific dealers.

My biggest dilemma is the RS3 that's on order as its a lot of money for 6 months motoring whereas a Box does have a residual, however with a stage 1 I may well be tempted to stick with my mid life crisis .......told you I was undecided, I think I think about this subject at least every hour, must be age that used to be sex !!

Pretty sure I'll have the same issue so I'll give it a try this Wednesday. If you can't map would you know consider a tuning box or are you just going to wait ?

The other question is now that Revo have tried to map the car will it have the notorious TD1 flag ?

I hope not mate - they've reloaded the original file (not a "standard" map) and that should not cause any issues. As for a tuning box, still a bit wary of them so I'm going to wait for now. I'll keep an open mind though - let me know how you get on?

I'm very tempted to get the tune box as if anything does go wrong can take it straight to Audi for warranty.

20 months with an MTM M-Cantronic box and it really has been faultless, factory fittings and quality and never misses a beat. Been back and forward to dealers on seperate occations for a new MMI Hard drive coded online by the factory, a HPFP and two services with no detection or issues!
Doesnt need the undertray off, its just an inline piggyback between the ECU and the MTM ECU, swops out in 5 mins! Highly recomended though they are ****** pricey!

That's really good to hear. I've done a LOT of thinking about how to tune my S1, and I keep coming back to MTM.

I'm in the US at the moment and can pick up a Burger Motorsports JB1 for £275, but my biggest worry is that I cannot remove it at the roadside if I break down. At least with the MTM I have the option even if it does cost 5x more.

Any idea how much you could sell yours for in a few years time?

I was all set to have a map and a downpipe but after being convinced my car would be locked I decided to see what else I could get for £1200+...............I actually bought a 14 year old MX5, one owner, 52K full history, slow as anything but great fun and a healthy resale, amazing what tuning money can buy.

Still fancy a remap though Ha Ha :)

Everyone should have an older front engined / rwd for a hoot. Here's mine, it's brilliant...

I currently have a dtuk box on my r and it hasnt skipped a beat either. The difference is night and day but i am well aware it won't pull as hard as a map. Second box, had one on the gtd. Would for sure recommend

I'll be selling it in the next month couple of months as ordered a new car and its not compatible - I'm thinking its worth about £750ish which is half bat!

Someone's going to get a billy bargain! Unfortunately it's not compatible with the S1 otherwise I would have taken it off your hands.

5minutes to take out the MTM box?

how do you have it installed?

I bought it directly at MTM headquarters ( they installed it ) and it is not a 5 min swap, more or less a 30min swap.

it would be nice to see a picture of your installation.

I will do one of mine.

I have done 72000km with the MTM box and still perfect.

regards

APR will throw in their Stage 2 upgrade for free if you buy their downpipe. Except that their downpipe for the S3 isn't available yet....

Go figure.......
I heard from my mechanic today that APR have had fitment issues with the new S3 downpipe....so they are reworking the dimensions on it for a perfect fit....this means it should be available soon..... :)

The TCU tune is well worth it. I really transforms the driving characteristics in both D mode and Dynamic/Race mode. Before getting it done I found myself using manual mode more and more as D mode always just racing through gears into 6th to be fuel efficient and dynamic mode never seemed to want to change into 3rd.

I've had the TCU tune now 3 months and now in D mode car much more lively and at least 1-2 gears difference than stock mode in most driving conditions. It will still happily sit in 6th and cruise along from say 70km/h on so fuel efficiency is the same. But under acceleration the gear is matched way better to throttle position.

In dynamic/Race mode car now happily will sit in 3/4 gear cruising at say 3500 rpm not just red lining second. Before I never used this mode for same reasons as most but now more than happy to drive in Race mode.

I think gear changes even faster and smoother than before, it's definitley more responsive off the mark and adding in the increased clutch clamping and other features of the TCU tune it's well worth it.
Great to hear that Aussie....I'm waiting on a couple of parts (catch can and atmospheric valve) then am in for the APR DSG tune as I have heard that it is excellent in conjunction with the APR Stage 1.....happy days.... :)

Panama, I've heard nothing but great things about the APR TCU tune. I'm sure you will love it.

My next step will be stage 2 once it's released and 100% right. Must be some minor issues holding back release but I'm glad they don't rush release but make sure spot on.

Definitely won't get APR DP though, price will be insane going off their prices of tunes now. Stage 1 tune here now $1995 and TCU $1695!

Read in USA that combo on sale under $1100! Can't believe 3 times price !

I'll go CTS DP for approx 1000 whereas I'm guessing that APR will be 2200+!

Hmmmm.....sounds expensive at your end mate.....Can you buy online in US, ship to Oz and have someone local install?
My mechanic just quoted me under $1k for the TCU (in the US I think its $700) so am biting the bullet cos I know its worth it to make the most of Stage 1....at the same time I'm going to get the APR catch can and replace my DV+ with a Forge mechanical atmospheric BOV as I have learnt that they sound really awesome.....will let you know once done :)
Had a minor incident over weekend.....took the car for a spin after it sat for 3 weeks.....warmed it up then gave it some welly for a bit....came across a souped up Honda Vtec in fast traffic.....showed him my stuff and the turbo outlet hose popped off.....all show and no go hahaha.....getting too old for that but was pretty thankful my turbo hadn't gone pop once I found the problem....

That's good news that nothing major wrong. would have been scary! You won't be disappointed with the DSG tune, it's next best mod after stage 1 tune. I'm sure the Forge will sound great, you will need to post up a video showing it once done.

We can't buy APR software online as you need to go to dealer so can't avoid Aust costs. That's life. I got my stage 1 tune on initial release last dec and got sale price too so I'm more than happy. Most hardware parts work out about same price once delivered from USA and intakes all about the same cost.

It's really just the APR software that's extremely expensive now almost double competitors and I have no doubt their DP will be well over 2K hence why so many here getting the CTS for around 1K, other european ones still around 2k mark and few of the USA ones don't fit RHD cars. It's still early on though so more options will become available soon but doubt any cheaper than the CTS anyway.

Ah yes, sorry I didn't mean buy the software online...I threw an email to APR this morning re: downpipe release and Stage 2 software as I'm gagging to get that done also. Will let you know.
Since my turbo outlet pipe was put back with double clips to make sure it doesn't move again my car does feel extremely strong....maybe its just me. Also, for what its worth, if you do change any hoses I have now seen the difference between the Forge and the Spulen ones I have....and I won't buy anything but Forge from now on/on the next car....and may even change them.

@PanamaS3 Sorry to jump in randomly but I was wondering what you think of the DV+ in combination with a DSG? I've only ever used them in manual cars and am wondering when it decides to dump to atmosphere really; anything between shifts with the paddles at full throttle or only on throttle release?

Do you think the Forge BOV you plan on getting will be much different than your current one?
