I clipped a curb on Saturday and the power steering went and the small red steering wheel light on the dash came on.

The garage have just foned to say the torque sensor broke and i need a new steering rack.

They are quoting £480 for a reconditioned 1 fitted.

Ebay lists loads, but i know the codes have to be right. Im a complete novice with cars, so could anyone advise on how i could check ebay to see if i would be fortunate to find second hand 1?

Crap start to the week.

My car is a Audi a3, 2004, SE. 1.6

get the numbers off yours and cross referance them with the 1s on ebay, most of them say what part number is

It is £956 or something like that for a new one - who is supplying the recon one? Audi? Need to factor in probably the guts of 8 hours fitting so probably Audi will say 2 days!

That's not far off the mark to be honest with you. When my rack packed up, my local stealer quoted me 13 hours labour - absolute nonsense if you ask me.

Find a company who fits these day in day out. I went to a power steering specialist in Glasgow who fitted and coded a recon'd unit in just 2 hours:applaus:

why on earth does the rack need coded?

How much was your reconditioned 1?

Im not far from glasgow, what was the company.

Foned my garage there to see if they can give me the part number so i can have a look about online...and he is saying he would need to strip down the existing steering rack to get it off, which is a bit of work,is that the case or is there elsehwere i could get my part number with out having to get the car up onto a ramp.

Excellent.

Just back, turns out although its a 2004 model,it has a 2003 steering rack, which needs a harness programmed, which takes the cost up to £460. So the same price as original qoute from local garage.

Just have to bite the bullet and get it done. Expensive clip of a crub that was.

Cheers for your help.

No problem.

It looks like they have reduced their prices from last year! Luckily mine was covered by the warranty that came with my car otherwise I would be well pi$$ed hearing that price lol.

I more mean - why is there electronics in the rack at all? For Power Steering or something?

I have an A3 1.9tdi PD105 Sport on a 54 plate, last week the little amber steering wheel sign came on the dash and it made a bleep sound along with the power steering cutting off. It used to start working if I switched the engine off and on but the light stayed on. I done a diagnostic and it also stated the 'Power Steering Torque Sensor'. Then today the light went from amber to RED. The power steering has permanently gone!!

Is this torque sensor 100% on the steering rack and not the column?

My mechanic says the Torque sensor is also known as the 'Angle Sensor'. Is this true? As I don't want him changing the wrong part.

I just need clear straight up advice as i'm into my cars but i'm not a mechanic.
