Hi guys.
Just wanted to pick your brains here.
A family member who lives in London had a timing belt replaced recently that led to a failure.
It was on a common rail VW engine.
Turns out that the wrong belt was supplied - ie - it was the correct number of teeth but 5mm narrower, which caused the belt to jump out of the pulley(ies) and cause engine damage (to what extent we don't yet know).
The belt spec changed after a certain chassis number supposedly.
Who is liable for this?

- the belt supplier for supplying the wrong belt?
- the fitter for not comparing the new belt against the old?
- my cousin for not stopping the car before damage was actually caused?
