hi all i have an audi a4 1.9tdi year 2001 and have got a problem with it . a couple of weeks ago when first starting it i would turn it over as normal it would sort of start up and then cut out straight away so i would turn off and turn back on again and i would have to turn it over for like 2 minutes i thought the battery would go flat it takes that long and then it would sort of splutter and start up (only when i pumped the accelerator) then it would be fine. it seemed like it would only happen if i tried starting it without putting my foot down on the pedal a touch. also now it has started constantly juddering (spluttering) really bad in every gear sort of like kangarooing and then i can get to 40mph and sort of get it running fine. this seems alot worse in the morning when the car is cold. now i have gone to a local garage and he cant seem to find the problem yet he as plugged in to computer and there is no error codes i cant really afford to pay audi prices so i was hoping somebody may have had this problem with there own or any mechanics may be able to tell us the possible problems so i can pass the info on to the guy at garage. cheers in advance
also forgot to mention when in idle the car is shaking like rocking side to side quite bad until u put your foot down on accelerator and rev it then it stops the guy at garage says its running on 3 cylinders then goes on to 4 ? does this sound like anything i dont no anything about car engines ??

Sounds like an egr fault to me. Does it chuck out loads of black smoke?

Injector loom failure (common on PD TDI's) has symptoms like you describe.
MAF & Coolant temp sensor are always a suspects for poor running too & often don't cause the ECU to throw codes when faulty.

hi mate thanks for reply there is no black smoke coming out

hi mate ive just realised the temp gauge doesnt work the sensor has gone but this has been like this since i had the car long before the problems started

Would have been fairly certain the shaking would be engine mounts but that would have been flagged up... presuming this mechanic used vag-com and not some other rubbish o_O other issue could be EGR, best to get rid of it even if it isn't coked up (which it probably is) and in the mean time make sure it's running on decent fuel and has the oil and filter changed regularly just to make sure everything's clean and running smooth. I had the exact same problem a while back but since then so much has changed I really couldn't tell you what solved it but it's running a hell of a lot cleaner now (judders a fair bit but that's because my engine mount was leaking so I replaced them with RS4 variants as they're solid so this prevents it from happening again).

im not sure what hes using but when i first took it to him he said it may be the egr valve until no codes came up he said it cant be because it would of shown ?

I would change out your temp sensor as it could be the ECU output has failed which will cause fueling problems. If your guage isn't working that output has obviously already failed. NB. CTS has 2 seperate outputs. Use genuine VAG CTS only, as aftermarket CTS's are notorious for not working correctly.

If it's an early model I don't think it shows... well the warning light on the dash doesn't flag up so I'm presuming it's not in vag-com either.

ok cheers guys i will get back to the guy at garage with this info hopefully get it sorted and i will post tonight if he managed to sort it.
